Just looks like an enlarged ipod touch to me, yet something still makes me want one
It would be useful for journeys, but when I am around town or something it isnt practical which is putting me off, unless I want to carry a backpack around with me all day
I am getting an ipod touch when a new model comes out, but with this so much closer to a realease date it interests me.
I really dont know what to do.

What are your thoughts on it?

thanks, Aaron

I'm in the same frame of mind as you Aaron, do you know if it has 3g internet built in? And also, do you know the cost?

I preferred the name Islate as well, which it was rumored to be.

I agree with you too, i think it would be a crackin thing to watch some movies off when travelling, although, for that price, i'll just stick to my psp.

This is why I wont be buying one, at all:
No GPS
No Camera
No Multitasking
No OLED Screen
An extremely disappointing 256 MB of RAM!
No Additional Touch Gestures
No Videocalling/conferencing/iChat
No Handwriting recognition
No Wireless Syncing or File Transfers
No File Management
No Ability to run custom Apps not preapproved by Apple and sold via the App Store
A Very Low Resolution Display with 25% fewer PPPs than the iPhone or iPod Touch
No integrated TV antenna or Radio antenna
No Video Out
No OTA Sync With Apple TV or Servers To Stream Video
No Low Reflective Screen Mode for high contrast Ebook Reading that doesn't hurt your eyes
Only 64 mbs of HDD space
No Gamepad attachment for Gaming With Physical Buttons/Tactile Feedback
No bluetooth, or ability to connect to a bluetooth mouse/keyboard
No RFID/IR to use it as a remote, or to tag it to yourself
No Replacable/Removable Batteries
No Flash support (no hulu.com)
No ability to connect to an extrernal hdd, or even an SDCard
A 1 Ghz processor that significantly slower than every single notebook on the market today, even the $199 ones.

Yes some models do, but they arent being released until April (standard models are being released in March)

I have also looked at the 3G price plans which are from Apple,
$15/month 250Mb
$25/month unlimited

I know, the gaming on this page looks amazing though lol

Thanks for that list, the HDD space is 64GB not Mb (which for me, is plenty). It does have bluetooth as you can attach a wireless keyboard.

Aaron.

As with all things Apple it looks appealing but costs too much for what it is!

No multi-tasking for non-apple apps is a big no no for me, I mean who designs a nice looking device like this and doesn't support multi-tasking application development. One app runnable at one time is just crazy, it might work for a phone but not something like this...it should be running a cut down version of OSX not an oversized iPhone OS IMHO

I think it's worth waiting to see what happens when Google OS matures, new gadgets based on this that come out will likely be the equivalent to the iphone/ipad OS but with multi-tasking and more freedom when it comes to development possibilities...and there is always Android too now...

Nope Apple, the iPad is not for me...just like the iPhone wasn't

you forgot no print services and as there is no camera there's no augmented reality apps for it either...doesn't even have a #40## usb port, everything still goes through the 30 pin apple connector. In short, a complete let down if you ask me...

There is several factors goign through my head at the minute.

If I am paying £370, I might aswell put an extra £50 too and get an iphone, but I still have 16months left on my current contract.
The size of it means it isnt ideal for taking around on short journeys (walking).
Ipod touch seems the way to go I think, I was planning on waiting until Septemeber when apparantly there is a new model coming out, but I dont think I can wait that long

thanks, Aaron

"do you think anybody will buy a very large copy of the ipod touch"? only if it has the apple logo. fortunately, there will be thousands of them. so, in the end, we will get something useful. just if you got sense, you will wait for a couple of years.
the "original" iphone, was a bust too. but the new versions are the dogs bits.
patients, techno buddies. useful ones will come along.

ive got an iphone and thats big enough! i like shiney gadgets.. but i dont think ill be rushing to buy one of these :/

I, in all honesty, don't think the iPad is anything all that special. It's a computer of sorts, but it's also an extremely closed source system.
The only innovation is the form factor...
I probably wouldn't buy one unless I got it for an extreme (Goodwill priced) discount, and after that, I'd probably jailbreak it (which allows you to run your own programs on it).

Another problem is that you can't use stuff like SD cards or DVDs, CDs, etc. Big issue for something of that size.

I'm sure it does everything that iPhone 3GS does and better, meaning it'd have to be at least a Cortex-A8 with an OpenGL ES 2 part that's at least as capable as an SGX. Probably a higher end SGX. We know it runs at 1GHz and we know Apple is an ImgTech licensee. Could be the beginning of the end of Apple's reliance on Samsung SoCs.

This is basically a big expensive iPhone, minus the phone part and the camera part. I bet playing accelerometer games on it is going to feel silly and uncomfortable.

Sorry for multi-site quoting, but I just had to. iMHO the iPad isn't very revolutionary, it's just a big iPod Touch, it's locked down, isn't very expandable, and doesn't float my boat.
I want a Pandora instead
I'll wait.

How true.. This comaparison highlights a cheaper alternative!

I would link the B3ta.com websites current image challenge, but it's not always safe for a family forum.. You'll find it easy enough on your own though.

Considering that you won't be using the iPad for anything but apps, eBooks, and the internet, that's plenty of processing power. Now, if you were to me using iMovie, or Word, that would be different. I am disappointed with Apple though. I was hoping for something a bit better.
