    Random Fish Dying

If it was old age, how come 2 die in the space of about a week? Just so confusing, especially when they are 2 different types of plecs. Just did a quick google image search and found what types of plecs I had. The smaller of the 2 was a Royal Plecostomus (I had royalty in my tank??) The big one...

    Random Fish Dying

I thought that at first, but they have been in that tank for about a year. Ok, 6 months ago I moved house, but they went back into the same tank, with the same plants n stuff. Well, less actually, because I trimmed the plants down. Just a lil confusing, because they have been fine all this time...

    Random Fish Dying

I'll post the results up tomorrow as soon as I get a chance. I remember makeing a note of the results somewhere. I'll also put the results for testing the water tonight as well. Although I do remember that everything was pretty low. Looking at some of the charts online now and... Ammonia was...

    Random Fish Dying

I used to have them wafers and pellets, but they were always left, so i never bothered with them. I have noticed that I now have to keep cleaning my glass since they have died. So they musthave been eating. Oh, ant there isnt as much waste in the tank anymore either. Yea, its one of those liquid...

    Random Fish Dying

To be honest, in the 12 months that Iv had the plecs, I have never seen them actually eat. I did seen them cleaning the glass, plants and decore a lot though. Food did sink to the bottom of the tank sometimes though. As for age... They were given to me and were quite a size. The biggest one...

    Random Fish Dying

I have a 60ltr tropical tank. In it were some Tetra Neons, 2 black widdow tetras, a male betta and 2 Plecs (No idea exactly what they were). Its being filtered by an external filter capable of doing a 300ltr tank. I have an air stone in it thats always on. There are some plants in there as well...

    Battery Operated?

There is another way of geting round this problem. Buy or build a small generator. Buying is obviously the easiest way but also more expensive. To build one though, you could use a small engine out of a lawn mower, strimmer, mini moto... Mount it on a frame with a car alternator running off it...

    Cold Cathode Lighting

You can usually get cold cathode tubes from Ebay or if you have a Maplin shop somewhere near you, you could get em from there. As for a 12V power supply... I am using n old PC power supply that I have converted so I can use it outside a computer. Supplus 12V 5V and a couple of others. Perfect...

    Can You?

Simple answer... Yes you can. WHY? Because... The wattage rating is the amount of power the ballast can push out safely. So for example... A 100W ballast will haply push out 50W, but if you try to draw out 150W then it cant cope and will overheat or just blow. Another example. Try to push a car...

Ammonia Sources in the USA, UK &

I found some. In Northwich, Cheshire (UK), there is a shop called 'The Shop With No Name' near M&S. Its 'Jeys Kleen Off Ammonia Multi-Purpose Household Cleaner'. Its definatly the right stuff. Just had a quick whiff if the stuff. HOLY S#@* ! Its freaking strong! Its £1.99 for a 500ml bottle...

Large Chip, But Not A Hole

Oh dear. Only thing I can suggest off the top of my head as a quick repair if there is no hole is a 2 part epoxy resin that will stick to glass and possibly some duct tape to go over it. When its completly set, I would fill it up outside and make sure there are no leaks and the thing holds...

    Cleaning Bogwood

Im not sure exactly what you mean by this but I think you might have to leave it in a bit longer because things can soak pretty deep into the wood. I recently purchased some Mopani bog wood and I wanted to stop it from turning my water brown. First I give it a realy good scrub under hot water...

Lfs Had A Weird Fish In Today.

I have never seen them before until a couple of days ago. I went into 2 different places near where I live and both of them had them farlowella thingies :) As for the glass cats, I have had 2 for about 7 or 8 months and they are pretty cool to watch. So freaky how all their organs are stored in...

    Filter

There isnt realy a maximum length fot the air tube. As long as its long enough so the black silencer at the top of the tube is out of the water then it will be fine. Have you got anything connected to the output of the pump? Sometimes things connected can restrict the water flow and the water...

    Internal Filters

I dont think its possible to 'over filter' your tank, because only enough beneficial bacteria will grow to consume the ammonia... Only thing you have to watch out for is the water current. Some fish like strong currents, some hate it. If you are worried about the filter not being tall enough to...

    Tank Completed!

Cool :) Keep the pics of your progress comeing. I thought it would be the way the pic was taken, but I just had to ask :) I built the hood from scratch for my tank and got a flat pack TV stand from Argos (I think) for the base. But I need to build a new hood because everything in the house is...

    Tank Completed!

Looks good :good: I personally would put some more stuff in there like plants, maybe a piece of bog wood and probably some kind of orniment thingy where the fish could hide like a castle or a sunken ship... But thats just me though. I like the effect on the stand as well. I first thought it...

New Nano External Filter - First Impressions

I have one very similar to that off ebay. Its and EDEN 501. Slightly different design in the top, black sponge instead of yellow and I didnt get any carbon. Cant remember how much I paid for it, but it wasnt very expensive. I have had it for about 8 or 9 months with no problems at all. There is...

    Filter

I thought that at first, but the CO2 bubbles wont stay in the water long enough. I suppose if you had a fairly large coil of pipe attached to the output then the CO2 would be almost completely dissolved. But it would have to be a good length of pipe. The pump I have pictured is a 700 L per hour...

    Opinions On Soll Bactinetts

Dont they need oxygen as well though? It would have to be quite a strong mix of ammonium though otherwise they wouldnt have much of a shelf life. What about the other cycle aids/instant cycle products out there that are in liquid form? Or are those the bad ones? Sorry, Im not being ignorant or...

    Filter

There should be an air inlet nipple on the powerhead somewhere near the output. As the water rushes past this (inside) it sucks the air in. The black thing on the end of your air line is a silencer, but you seem to be missing the top of it. This is a pic of one of my spare powerheads.

How Did You Get Into Fishkeeping.

Well, it all started when we found a little visitor in our kitchen one day. My girlfriend found something and shouted over to me. I went to have a look at what it was but I had no idea. So I put it into a little tub, took some pictures and tried to find out what it was. We got a small 20L...

    Opinions On Soll Bactinetts

I'm a bit scepticle about stuff like this. This is what it says on the website As good as it sounds, I cant see how its gonna work. Yea, it says that its got millions of hungry bacteria... Thats where I'm gonna stop. If they are so hungry, how come they arnt already dead? If you take your...

    Tap Water Conditioner Question

Well, I have 2 tanks going at the mo. A 60L (13.2 UKg, 15.9 USg) and a 20L (4.4 UKg, 5.3USg). Sorry, not sure exactly which units everyone works with. The 60L tank has been running for about 8 or 9 months with an Aqua Pro 1 external filter and a small cheap internal bio filter. The 20L tank has...

    Tap Water Conditioner Question

So if I had a good sized tank going for say... 5 years, I could just do water changes with just tap water? Sounds a bit dodgy to me. I think I'll play it safe and keep using the water conditioner. After all. It wont do any harm :)

    Tap Water Conditioner Question

Thanks for your help guys. If water conditioner is becoming optional, what should I be using instead? I have always been told that I should treat any water that goes in the tank with some form of conditioner to get rid of the nsaties (chlorine, heavy metals...).

    Tap Water Conditioner Question

Hi guys. I have been keeping tropical fish for a little while, but I still have a question. Every time I do water changes I add my tap water conditioner as it says on the bottle, mix it up, then I leave it for a few mins then add it to the tank. Now, I have been using Tetra Aqua Safe since I...

    Which Strong Glue Is Safe?

    Power Head And Filtration Questions

Thanks for that. So I'll be ok with a decent sized powerhead depending on how much flow I want. If i dont get a decent intake strainer for the powerhead, I might try to make one from the perspex i have left, unles I can get a long strainer from somewhere. I dont realy want to use a sponge around...

    Power Head And Filtration Questions

First of all, what exactly is a power head used for? Im kind of a newbie at this stuff. Im looking to build a custom hood for my new tank with a filter system of my own design in the front half and lighting in the back half. Or maybe the other way around. My first problem is geting the water up...

I cant see it being a problem realy as long as the thermostat works ok and the temperature is set right. I would keep a constant circulation around the heater to avoid the water around it heating up too quick.

    Slimey Stuff

I have an external filter and inside the pipes there is a buildup of something. Absolutly no idea what it is. Can anyone tell me what it could be?
