There is another way of geting round this problem. Buy or build a small generator. Buying is obviously the easiest way but also more expensive. To build one though, you could use a small engine out of a lawn mower, strimmer, mini moto... Mount it on a frame with a car alternator running off it...

There should be an air inlet nipple on the powerhead somewhere near the output. As the water rushes past this (inside) it sucks the air in. The black thing on the end of your air line is a silencer, but you seem to be missing the top of it. This is a pic of one of my spare powerheads.

Thanks for your help guys. If water conditioner is becoming optional, what should I be using instead? I have always been told that I should treat any water that goes in the tank with some form of conditioner to get rid of the nsaties (chlorine, heavy metals...).

I cant see it being a problem realy as long as the thermostat works ok and the temperature is set right. I would keep a constant circulation around the heater to avoid the water around it heating up too quick.
