hi, im just curious, im after a new filter for a new tank i have, and am slightly concerned that the fluval 1 that states it is good enough to filter the tank, isnt 'deep' enough for the actual tank

the tank is approx 18" tall and im worried that the fluval wont be able to circulate enough water for the tank size, but the blokey at the LFS said it would be fine

is it possible to over filter your tank if i purchased the bigger filter, or is this not advisable?

the tank is 34l and the fluval 1 says it can handle up to 40l

or can anyone reccomend a better filter system?

I have a fluval 1 which I was using in a 27 litre. Its ok, but it gets clogged up and the flow reduces really easily. I've also used a Fluval 2 in the same tank (was cycling it to put into a different tank) and it was pretty good. The 2+ has better media compartments and you can use inserts such as carbon/fine poly pad etc. Reasonably powerful too (with flow control).

I dont think its possible to 'over filter' your tank, because only enough beneficial bacteria will grow to consume the ammonia...
Only thing you have to watch out for is the water current. Some fish like strong currents, some hate it.
If you are worried about the filter not being tall enough to go to the bottom of your tank, dont worry about it. Most internal filters dont go all the way down to the bottom. As long as its capable of pumping 4 times the volume of the tank in an hour (I think thats right) then it should be fine. But... It wont hurt to have a bigger filter. Like they say, 'Bigger is better' :)
