I take it you should transfer the parents too, as I believe the fry will feed from the mucus from the mothers gills for the first week or so. By the way the eggs have now hatched, so i am not sure if I should transfer or not now
The eggs have now hatched and two Discus are guarding them for all they are worth. The fry are not swimming yet, how long will the parents be able to protect them.
I have been noticing two of my discus acting very aggressive to the rest of the tank mates for the last few days. When I looked closer I noticed what appears to be eggs attached to the side of a divers helmet (ornament). Is it best to try and move the mating pair and the helmet, or will they...
If you keep one angel on its own, they are much more peaceful. As with most cichlids they can be agressive when breeding. I don't see any problems with that set up
I keep 8 discus in a 4 foot, 300 litre tank, as long as you check the water, and keep on top of changes you should be fine. I do have an external and internal filter, as they are messy.
I believe Jack Dempseys are a Central American Cichlid, and there would be more advice on the New world forum. I do know they are fairly aggresive and are best kept with other similar Cichlids such as Convicts, Firemouths or Parrots
I have had to change tanks over on a few occasions and never had a problem. Using the same filters is a must, also try and use the old ornaments, sand gravel etc, even try and transfer the same water across. One important thing to monitor is that the water temperature does not drop too much...
To cycle the tank, you have to have a source of ammonia, either from fish waste or rotting food. You could feed more or add a couple more fish, preferably hardy fish. Feeder guppies are often good for cycling tanks
I have a juwel, and I keep discus. I found the Juwel filter was not good enough for discus, so I added a Fluval external, the two working together do a great job. However I would not recommend a Juwel if you plan on keeping any Cichlids
I would not let the Kh bother you, unless you intend keeping discus who require low Kh. Amonia and nitrite are the most important when first cycling a tank
