Breeding Swordtails In My Tank - Thoughts?

Thanks for all the help and whatnot. Should be getting some extra fish a week Saturday, so I'll let people know how stuff goes. Any tips on getting them to breed? I'll come to the looking after the fry if it ever happens.

Breeding Swordtails In My Tank - Thoughts?

Given what I have read from Annastasia in the past, I would imagine that she feels like me that a 24 inch (or less) tank, though enough for swordtails to survive in, is not going to give much scope for a fish that can grow to 4 inches and has a constant need for activity. It's like keeping a...

Breeding Swordtails In My Tank - Thoughts?

I don't expect many to survive, and if they do, I hope to get a new tank at some point to keep newer fish.

    Gouramis With Community Fish

I used to have 4 in the same community tank, and all lived well together. I guess it depends on the kind you keep.

    Cloudy Water After Hoovering

Usually happens with me. Upon stirring the gravel, the water goes murky for about 2 hours. If the filters working fine it'll sort it out, and the rest will settle. Don't worry, quite normal.

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Am doing. All looking good and active, been like it all day. Hopefully all is good, but keeping a close eye on them to make sure nothing crops up.

    Moonlight Gourami's

When in my LFS getting some fish, some lovely Moonlight Gourami's caught my eye, still fairly young as they can't have been much other an inch in length, and too big in any other proportion. My question is, are they fairly peaceful, and be OK with my rosy barbs? I also have 3 smaller silver...

Breeding Swordtails In My Tank - Thoughts?

I've kept Swordtails before and had no problems. Also kept Gouramis which are larger in size, perhaps slightly shorter, and also did very well in this tank. Not degrading what you're saying, merely throwing in past experiences to the mix.

    My Poor Cat Vivian

Sorry to hear the news Bex, but you did the right thing for poor little Vivian. :( I know how it feels to have a loved cat put down, and it really isn't easy. At first I didn't know what to think, but in the evening it had settled in and I was in floods of tears. My thoughts are with you, keep...

Breeding Swordtails In My Tank - Thoughts?

I'm not overly sure of the gallons, but 11 would seem about right. I'd prefer livebearers to egg layers.

    My Red Tail Black Shark!

Red Tail Black Shark's are known for being territorial, so new fish won't know what's their territory or not. They'll learn in time where not to go. Is he doing much damage to the fish, or is it just chasing?

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Asked my Dad whether to put some more meds in last night, and he was wary because of hoping not to overdose, and seeing as there were no signs of fungus, it wasn't worth the risk. Fish are fine this morning, all swimming around and fed well.

Help.. I Have A One Eyed Fish!

Is it just a hole where the eye should be, or is it covered? If it's a hole, I doubt he was born with it, if it is covered over, then it could be natural.

Help.. I Have A One Eyed Fish!

Probably be best to return it, and let the shop keeper know of the problem so he can check the tank he keeps the swordtails in for any problems. Also, if it is carrying an infection, you don't want any other fish catching it.

    Totaly New :)

Make sure you don't go with too big a tank, seeing as it's your first, it's better to start small and get bigger as you gain more knowledge. Remember that when buying all the equipment, not to get any fish until your tank is ready and fully cycled. No need to rush into getting the fish in, as...

Thanks, if I see some early signs I'll add some in ASAP.

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

I haven't got a clue how to do that with my heater, hopefully my Dad will have an idea. How far should it be turned down? Also, should some more of the med be added tonight, to try and keep things down? Fish are much perkier now, barbs as healthy as ever and the silver ones back to normal.

Is it definately columnaris? Temperature is 26 degrees C.

    Rosy Barbs And Breeding

I know this may not be the actual spawning, but I have noticed the male nudging the females tummy and chasing her a little bit. The female has a fairly big tummy, and it seems to have something white inside. Could this be the male trying to nudge the female towards plants, which I read is what...

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

It did, simply because he was in between a rock and plant, and hard to manouvre the net between the two to get at him, resulting in me gently nudging him into open waters to scoop up easily. They're now close together, so perhaps they're gaining some confidence. Hopefully they'll be OK for...

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Oh, I didn't know it was so bad, I just assumed because it was weak the force of the water would kill it quickly. This is the first I've flushed whilst still alive, any others have gone when dead. Should I be worried that the other fish of its species are much quieter? They were fine before I...

I'm not too sure of the gallons, but I think it's about 11.

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

I spotted the Rosy Barbs having a couple of pecks at him, and thought, this isn't fair on it. I simply put it in the toilet, and it was upsetting to see it still trying to swim, but I turned away and flushed the handle and it went first time. I still feel bad about flushing it whilst partially...

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Well, earlier I checked the infected fish, and no sign of improvement, in fact, a sizeable chunk of its fin was missing, the fungus had eaten through. I then noticed, a bit later, that is was upside down on the floor of the tank, still alive, but it couldn't swim properly. I just now released...

    My Poor Cat Vivian

I'm sorry to hear it's not looking good. Sadly, vets bills and other animal carers are usually extremely large, and when you want to do something for your pet, you just can't afford it. :( I hope that she does pull through, but from what you say, it doesn't seem likely. My thoughts are with...

Thanks for the info. I'll hopefully get some more plants, which will give the eggs at least some chance.

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Gave it last night. The fish fed last night, which was encouraging, but the fungus doesn't look any better (or worse). Not sure how many times you're supposed to give this med.

Thanks. I'm thinking of adding some live plants, so that should hopefully provide them with some cover.

It's more bleached out on the tail fin, but fluffy on the side fin.

Breeding Swordtails In My Tank - Thoughts?

I currently have a tank going with 2 Rosy Barbs (1 male and 1 female), and 4 silver fish, with red tips to their fins, one without, which I'm assuming is female. If I could remember their name, I assure you I'd say it! My question is, would swordtails get on OK here, and would any fry survive...

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Is it definately columnaris then? Doesn't seem to have affected the fish too much, I suppose it acts quickly.

    Rosy Barbs And Breeding

Apparently they spawn on plants, and lay 100-300 eggs at a time. You'd think one would get through? :P Another tank may be an option some time, I may just try swordtails as a starter breeder.

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Thanks a lot, will probably have to wait a bit sadly, hopefully get it done tonight. Just need to wait for my Dad, as I always get confused with the dosage and things. The fish hasn't done much all day, but no signs of dropping right to the bottom or an increase in fungus, and the other fish...

    Rosy Barbs And Breeding

Read up a bit on it, and seems like the chances of survival in the main tank are slim? Would even small fish try and eat the fry? If some eggs did get through and hide for a bit, would the fry have a chance?

    Rosy Barbs And Breeding

I have two Rosy barbs at the moment, and am pretty sure one is male and one is female. One is much brighter in colour, with black at the tip of its fins, whilst the other is paler and has no black tips to the fins. I am assuming the first is the male, and the second the female, as the second is...

Best thing to do is when you see her, just give her attention, make a fuss, things like that, should perk her up nicely.

White (fungal?) Path On Fish' Tail Fin

Well, I went out and bought some stuff for my fish, the main thing being some medicine. No sign of Melafix, so I picked up Aquarium Treatment 8, Anti Fungus and Fin Rot. Not sure how it'll do, anyone used it before? I seem to remember using it once before, and it did the trick. It comes with...
