I decided to do an experiment. I went against the advice given to me at the pet store and I bought a gourami for my community tank. They told me that the gourami would eat the other fish. It has been my experience that this is not the case. I have had the gourami in the community tank for almost 2 years now and not one of the smaller fish has been attacked by him. He's really docile. The only time he attacked was when I put another gourami in the tank. They get possessive over their tank and attack the new gourami. He seems to be a very happy fish (obviously he is if he's lived 2 years already). My suggestion to those wanting a gourami for their community tank: Get a gourami that is very very young and don't put more than one in a community tank or they will attack eachother. For me it was a very worthwhile experiment. I love my gourami! :yahoo:

I used to have 4 in the same community tank, and all lived well together. I guess it depends on the kind you keep.

hi,
i have a dwarf in my comunity,(ted) hes ace, sometimes he will chase certain fish but nothing like fighting.
he also lives with 2 pink kissers, if the tank is big enough and the fish is placid, yes it can work. donna :)

i had a pair of opaline gourami's in a community tank for years with no issues whatsoever. They had the odd spat between them but nothing serious and never bothered the other fish. :good:

I have two female gourami's (blue and yellow) in a community tank and they get on well, the blue one we got 2 years ago and then 6 months later we bought the yellow one. Never been any problems in my tank, the only thing is that any young fry born in the tank is eaten, but as they are probably guppy fry I don't mind :D

I also have croaking gourami's in there without problem so I'm not sure what the issue could be apart from if you had a male and female, then you would have a big problem.
