I noticed today one of my new fish (got yesterday), isn't moving much at all. It's staying in the same place in the tank, not moving around, just staying there, moving it's tail quickly to keep it there.

Upon feeding them this morning, I knew something was wrong when it didn't dart to the surface like the other fish.

Upon inspecting the fish, I noticed a small white patch on the tail fin of the fish, so I assume it's some kind of fungus, which is affecting the fish' movement and eating habits.

I can't remember the name of the fish, but it's fairly small, with red tips to it's fins, and silver body.

The rest of the fish in the tank are acting normally, chasing each other, eating properly and all look healthy, so I'm worried this fungus will spread onto others.

So, will normal fungus medicine that you put into the water clear this up, or is it more serious? I should be able to go out at about 3:30 this afternoon to get something, so as to get this disease under control before it takes lives.

It now has some fungal stuff on its side fin. I may have missed it before, but there's a small bit there. :(

Try Melafix, i have found it works well on Fungus.

How much does that cost?

What are the chances of other fish catching it? Will it take time to take hold, or will it spread quickly?

Well, I went out and bought some stuff for my fish, the main thing being some medicine.

No sign of Melafix, so I picked up Aquarium Treatment 8, Anti Fungus and Fin Rot. Not sure how it'll do, anyone used it before? I seem to remember using it once before, and it did the trick. It comes with some pretty good instructions, catering for other ways of looking after the fish, and comes with a pippet as well.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot, will probably have to wait a bit sadly, hopefully get it done tonight. Just need to wait for my Dad, as I always get confused with the dosage and things.

The fish hasn't done much all day, but no signs of dropping right to the bottom or an increase in fungus, and the other fish are all happily swimming around. Hopefully the medicine will do the trick and the affected fish can join in the fun.

Get the med into the tank to night as columnaris can soon kill a fish and it needs nipping in the bud before it takes over.

Is it definately columnaris then? Doesn't seem to have affected the fish too much, I suppose it acts quickly.

If the patch is fluffy its columnaris, but also it can be just like a bleached out patch too.

Ok go in with anti finrot and fungus med, if it dosn't work in a week you will have to switch to another med, good luck.

Gave it last night. The fish fed last night, which was encouraging, but the fungus doesn't look any better (or worse). Not sure how many times you're supposed to give this med.

Well, earlier I checked the infected fish, and no sign of improvement, in fact, a sizeable chunk of its fin was missing, the fungus had eaten through.

I then noticed, a bit later, that is was upside down on the floor of the tank, still alive, but it couldn't swim properly.

I just now released it from a plant it had got caught in, and when watching it try to swim, it had no control over where it was swimming, and soon went back to the bottom, upside down.

There is no doubt it's going to die, but if the other fish peck at it, could they get the fungus, or could it spread? Is it best to remove it as soon as I see it's dead?

Sorry no he's not going to make it he has to many bacteria infections piling up i would end his suffering, once they are upside down they are dying.
I would get him out of the tank now, fill a jug up with very cold water add some icecubes and place the fish in, its very fast if the water is extremely cold, leave the fish in a while just to make sure he passed over.
Do a few daily water changes on the tank.
