    Discus Book?

I've been keeping angels in a planted tank for 2 years now. The water's been stable and filtered through an RO system and re-mineralised. Although not at 30C, I've kept it very soft and around pH 6. In fact, they've had it so good they've not stopped breeding! Although I'm going to be moving...

    Discus Book?

In the next few months I'm going to dismantle my existing setup and buy a large 500-600 L tank for a planted discus setup. Does anyone know of any good, complete books that I can buy on discus including details of fellow tank mates and plants that will also thrive in 30C pH 6 soft water conditions?

    Bristlenose catfish - natural foods?

Chard? I think I'm too much of a carnivore to know what that is! :D

    Bristlenose catfish - natural foods?

Tomato? That's a new one on me. Unfortunately my bristlenose doesn't seem to like corgette, maybe I'll try peas and/or lettuce

    Bristlenose catfish - natural foods?

I bought a bristlenose a few weeks ago but never see it during the day. It's done a very good job at cleaning up the bogwood in my tank though  I've been putting in catfish and algae pellets after lights out, but I'm not sure if they survive long enough for the bristlenose to find...

    Flying Fox or Bristlenose/Plec

Make sure it's a SIAMESE flying fox not an ordinary flying fox. The former loves algae incl hair algea, the latter won't touch it.

I can testify to that. I have one that finally outgrew my 140L tank in about 10 months...

fish food and new tank probs

It sounds to me like your tank hadn't cycled fully (this can take up to 30-40 days even with adding filter bacteria) and your fish died of ammonia and/or nitrite poisoning.

    fluval external

I've owned Fluval and Eheim filters and will always stick with Eheim in the future. More expensive, but well worth it.

    Black Widow

Sounds like an internal parasite of bacteria. Try an off the shelf remedy from your LFS. If you have a 2nd tank, remove the sick fish and treat it separately or treat the whole tank.

fish food and new tank probs

It may have been some form of bacteria, but had you cycled your tank ensuring that ammonia and nitrite readings were zero before you added the fish?

    Small plec recommendations?

Bristlenoses seem to be the most talked about plecs but I've seen Zebra plecs and all kinds of expensive spotted plecs for sale locally, but never any bristlenoses...

    Small plec recommendations?

Could someone recommend some small types of plec (max. 4-6") that are quite easy to locate on the high street? I used to have a common plec that sadly outgrew it's home and I'd love to replace it with a small variety. There are some recommendations elsewhere on searching this forum but I'm not...

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

    I guess it's all just a balancing act -_-

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

That does seem strange. A couple of years ago when I started up, the NO3 reading in my tapwater was quite high so after a week the levels in my tank were over 100 mg/l. That's why I invested in an RO system. I tested my tap water again yesterday and although PO4 readings are still 3-4 mg/l...
  16. N

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

My PO4 readings are now less than 0.1 mg/l which is preventing a lot of new hair algae appearing - I guess I'll just have to remove the old stuff by hand. That means getting rid of all by bogwood.... :/
  17. N

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

What's kno3? If the hair algae came back after 5 days of lights off then I'm never going to get rid of it! I guess once the spores are in your setup it's impossible to get rid of them... :/

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

My lights are on a timer for 10hrs a day. I have 3x25W T8s of varying flavours - I wonder if this is too much?

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

I guess the big problem is finally getting rid of it once your tank becomes infested!

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

My nitrate readings are now permanently below 10 mg/l thanks to the RO water. Do they need to be lower than that?

No one else had any problems?

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

PO4 is phosphate. It's present in most people's tapwater and a lot of dried food as it's harmless in low concentrations but is also a very good fertiliser. I've used Seachem's flourish excel in the past and it hasn't touched the hair algae - why would adding carbon to the water help?

Correlation between CO2 & hair algae?

Has anyone using a CO2 system in their tank noticed the appearance of hair algae? I've been plagued with the stuff for the past year and have removed my home made CO2 system thinking that it could have caused the outbreak. I have also always had high NO3 and PO4 readings (high readings from...

    Bristlenose catfish and hair algae

Well I bought them from a shop that had flying foxes and other derivatives in seperate tanks and I've compared them to online photos of SAEs so I think they are. They're just greedy, much quicker than my other fish and prefer Tetraprima!

    Bristlenose catfish and hair algae

I think it does - they don't touch it. Does anyone else have any contradictory evidence?

    Nobody knows then? :/

    Bristlenose catfish and hair algae

Will Bristlenose catfish eat hair algae? My ottos and SAEs are't touching it and although Rowaphos is doing wonders to the PO4 levels in my tank, the hair algea is persisting... :( I don't want anything that gets bigger than 4-5".

    Cure for a sad Angelfish?

Thanks for the advice. I don't think it's being picked on - it's the biggest angel and before it stopped eating it was doing all the harassing! I'll look into the Hex treatment. I've also replaced my pH test kit as I think it was beyond it's life. A new kit measured a pH of 7.5 which is 1-1.5...

    Cure for a sad Angelfish?

I bought a 3/4 grown angelfish about 6-8 weeks ago, as shown here: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=72222&hl= At first it was a very lively character, always first to any food and imposing it's will on my other angels. However recently it's just not itself. It sits at the sides...

Just come across this site advertised in Practical Fishkeeping this month: http://www.meraquatica.co.uk/ Their prices seems very very good! Has anyone else used them? - I've been looking for a reason for buying a 500 - 600L tank for a while :D

    UV steriliser & hair algea

Yeah but NO3 and PO4 will be added back in too as well as minerals :/
  37. N

    UV steriliser & hair algea

I use 100% RO water as the tapwater has >4mg/l PO4. Why do you recommend a 50:50 mix - surely that defeats the object? I use sodium bicarbonate and Seachem Equilibrium to restore the minerals and KH - neither contain PO4. There was an article in Practicalfishkeeping magazine a couple of months...

    New Angelfish (& digital camera!)

Thanks everyone. Just changed my other large male this morning for a what looks like a young female - fingers crossed
  39. N

    UV steriliser & hair algea

Yeah - I've thought of that. I bought an RO unit due to the levels of PO4 in my tapwater, but there's just too much of it in dried fishfood so the levels always rise. I've tried GreenX in the past which didn't really help - is Rowaphos better?

Would a suitably sized Vecton UV steriliser help to eliminate the hair algea in my tank?
