i'm thinking about scrapping my ideas of getting an eheim ext for my discus tank and am now looking at a fluval 304, however, the thing thats bugging me is how load are they?! i dont wanna get a filter for my lounge that sounds like some one is using a jackhammer, i'm looking for as near to silent as possible! would i be better off going with the eheim??

Ive owned both, the Eheim,s are better filters but the fluvals are a lot cheaper. Neither are noisy both do a job :D

i want one that will hold a cobi of media though and i cant find any info on the eheims, i was under the belief that they will only hold one type at a time, is this correct?

I've owned Fluval and Eheim filters and will always stick with Eheim in the future.

More expensive, but well worth it.

I'm new to fish keeping, but everyone I have spoken to says 'Eheim are the Rolls Royce' of filters.

I have just ordered the 2128 Thermo External for my 70gal tank (uk)

2128 Filter £190.

2 Ltrs of Ehfimech media £11.

5 Ltrs of Ehfisubstrat Pro media £39.

if at all possible, would anyone with both types fill me in on the pros and cons??

sirminion and boxman, do you keep yours in the cabinet, or is it just really quiet??

204 for £69 from my LFS. Cannot hear it at all!!!!

The joys of living in a VAT free island!!! :kana: :p
I only paid about £60 for my 204. Probably less (it was about 2 years ago). And I'm on the mainland, VAT'ed up to the hilt baby. The LFS has 404s for around £90ish. (It states it's a sale, but it's been going for about 2 years now B) )

I have always been happy with Fluvals. They do the job very well. Only annoyance is starting the syphon back up (which I believe is easier on Eheims).

I use an eheim filter and its more or less completely silent. The addition of self priming makes it really easy to start too, and I know its only visual, but seems to polish the water a lot more than other filters.

i have an Eheim 2217+ on my 60G, its a really good filter and keeps the water nice and clean! The only gripe i have with eheim is they dont use very good moulds for their impellers, you often find ones with chips taken out of them. So if you buy one from your LFS ask to check the impeller first.

i'ved used both so here's my findings.....

both very quiet
i found both of them did the job well
fluval fittings are hard to get exactlu how you want, everything springs back
ehiem fittings are nice and easy to set up and have everything just how i like
fluvals are your worst night mare to start up again...to the extent i put a hole in the wall!!
ehiems start like a dream boat
pretty sure eheims have a bigger media capacity.

not from experince but through work ehiem are a much easier company to deal with and send replacements for warranties without getting a head ache!

ehiem spares are also cheaper i'ved realised. i also prefre the green tubing in my tank to the manky grey bits.

and last thing the size of the intake strainer on the fluval gets clogged very quickly in a planted tank.

You can get the Fluval 304 from 'Pets At Home' for £60..... :D

Just look on www.yell.co.uk for your nearest one ;)

I got mine about 12 months from there, for £45.... bargain !!!! ;)

Have it in my sitting room, ourside of the cabinet, and can't hear a thing ;)
