I asked the customer support center a similar question. I was concerned that seriously reducing the flow would cause damage. Here's the response I received:

I've got about 6" of hose between the can and the inbound tap, probably only 3-4" on the outbountd side. I don't think it really matters, you just don't want to haul out 4' of tube every time you pull the canister for cleaning.

Mine has the taps as well, but I'm leaving those for connection only. The split return lines need to have seperate controls so I don't get a geyser instead of a waterfall :D

In my neighborhood (Atlanta Ga) they usually run from $7-10 at Petsmart & Petco, and from $10-13 at the "better" fish & aquarium stores. Once in a while Petsmart will have them for around $5.
