    New Sand & Filter

Yes you can, and if you add some Acuclear into the water also, this will help with the clearing. You will however need to clean the media once the clearing has finished. Then you will need to start the process of cycling your tank before adding any fish.

    Twin lights or just one?

The answer really depends on what you want to keep in the tank. If you are going to keep brightly coloured fish then the more illuminated the better. It's all a matter of personal choice. Just remember though, if the tank is going to get natural light and artificial light you need to keep a...

    aquabid?

Most reputable fish sellers will give you a guarantee that if your fish dies within a week of purchase they will refund the cost. There are always conditions attached but as a rough guideline if the fish seller will stick their neck out then often but not always, it is a sign of trust- from both...

    bogwood coloured water

Tannin also does add a little acidity to the water, just to beware. If you want to rid the colour you will need to invest in some good high quality grade carbon. This is then placed in a net bag after following the cleaning instructions and placed in your filter. It will keep on working for a...

Sylvia, I would personally recommend Nitra-Zorb from API products. If you have a read of the previous threads concerning nitrite spikes you will see that I have explained about it.

Gixer. Thank you for your comments. I have been keeping tropical and marines for over 25 years and personally I try to keep to the conditions my fish were bred in. Be it my own breeding or that of my lfs, and personally I have found that it has worked for me. I'm not saying you are wrong or I...

    "Net Dip"

Lizard is right, generally it refers to mixing up a solution in a bucket and having many nets plunged into it. This term is used by lfs when they have several nets for several tanks to try to avoid cross infection. The solution is usually methylene blue.

Yes. In books and mags they tell you the water conditions for a particular breed of fish in its natural state. Most fish especially the more common but no less lovely ones have been bred in captivity. Therefore their water conditions may differ from that of their "wild" counterparts. Depending...

    Nitrate levels...

Sylvia, this may seem an obvious question, but have you tested the water you are putting into your tank. The water may have high metal compounds already in it and chemicals such as chlorine and cloromines to disinfect the water system. Also depends on where your water source comes from will also...

    nitrite spike

If you are experiencing nitrite spikes, what I would recommend is nitra-zorb. This is made by API and costs around 14GBP to treat 50 galls. It is a sachet/pillow containing a resin compount that literally absorbs nitrite/ammonia/nitrate from your water. It can be recharged. (Please note I have...

    Airstones?

Just a maintaince tip for all those that use a check valve. They should be renewed every year for safety purposes. Remember they are only rubber tubing modified to seal on backpressure encased in a plastic case. Rubber perishes with light and constant moisture so in time these tiny inexpensive...

    wrong choice again

The answer to your question is NO. Sharks are designed for large tanks- over 100 galls and large tanks. It does sound most odd for the filter to be able to suck the fish into it unless the filter inlet is unprotected. All filters sold always have some sort of safe guard against fish being drawn...

Don't want to boil my fishies...

The simplist solution to your problem is to buy a temperature guage. They are inexpensive and there are lots to choose from. Remember even a brand new heater/stat can be faulty. If it keeps on giving erratic surges in temperature and you can confirm this by a guage then replace the faulty unit.

    Oxygen in the water question

It also depends on how many/size of fish that are kept in the 10 G tank. If the tank is well stocked then it would be advisible to add an air bubbler in it, if it is understocked then you will be fine with your current setup

Red-finned Sharks and Upside Down Catfish

The compatibility of these fish are well known. They are aggressive towards ANY fish that comes into their territory. They like caves and dark places to hide away in. These fish have no relationship to the real sharks and shark family of fish. My advice is if you want upside down catfish stick...

    Question about Neon Tetras

I would agree with TCA. If you are new to fishkeeping, I would read the pinned topics in this section first and then go for the more hardier types of fish. Neons are far too delicate a fish for the novice fishkeeper.

Sea shells in fresh water tank

Most shells are made from calcium. In a tank of water the calcium will slowly dissolve and alter the hardness of the water. If the creature in the shell were still alive it would replace the lost calcium compounds naturally, but because there's nothing there to do the replacement the shell...

    fin rot

There should be no carbon in your filtration unit. All that there should be in the unit is filter wool/floss. Fin Rot is often caused by bacterial infection. This can be due to water conditions, stress or even fighting. Treatment must be quick, because if the rot reaches the tail base, it's too...

How do you DISECT a guppy?

To give you a direct answer to your question. It is not possible for the ordinary fishkeeper to disect you guppy to save the fry. The reason for this is you would need to cut through the peritonaeum. This is a very delicate membrane and you would need to have a surgical scalpel to perform this...

    Somewhat newbie questions

If it's a new setup then all that you explained is normal. The fish are in a new environment and they need to settle. Just keep doing what you are doing and soon the fish will get accustomed to the vibration of your walk. In their natural state, heavy water vibrations signal disaster or a very...

    Adding filter media..

Filter media, comes in many forms. Filter floss is merely the final stage. Dependant of the type of filter you have. The bottom is usually a course sponge or ceramic soporax type media, then the next layer is your absorbant type media, such as nitra zorb or ammo aorb or ammo-carb or just a less...

    Ceaning

Everyday is too much. It's doesn't give the bacteria to colonise. The fish love it because you are "rooting" up the food for them. Something that they would do ordinarily. If fish become reliant on you doing it for them and when you can't , they will take badly if they have to do it for...

    Periodic Passing Away

You say you think the water is OK, have you actually tested the water. Tetra Easybalance doesn't actually eliminate the ammonia and nitrates.
