I am setting up a 30 gallon tank and want to know what would the group recommend for the bottom.. I know stones but anything else. I had 2 other tanks before but had to break them down and move just starting back up.

If you could tell me what plants and what subsoils to use that would be great.

Thanks
BOb

The bottom may depend on the type of fish you are going to keep. I have kept plants in all types of substrate with great results. Just gravel is fine but make sure you have great lighting, 3 watts per gal. and fertilize when required. You could also use laterite as a base and cover with sand or gravel. I have also used flourite as the bottom but you cant use cories or other whiskered cats with this stuff as it tears the barbels off them. HTH :)

Ok I know this is going to be a stupid questions, but tstenback wrote "You could also use laterite as a base and cover with sand or gravel. I have also used flourite as the bottom" what is laterite and flourite? and where can you buy them? Sorry I am not new to fish just plants..LOL

I would sent a PM to the expert M8. In this instance send it to Rose.
She in our resident aquatic plant expert.

Sorry about not explaining the terms. Here is a link for laterite and also for flourite. Both contain iron and other nutrients that make plants grow very well even without other in water fertilizers. Again though your primary considerations for a planted tank with fish will be the amount of light you have, the types of fish (some are real plant eaters and others are just plant beaters), and of course the effect your looking for (the type of plants you will be using). Good Luck and let us know how you make out. If you have any other questions let the group know. Also there is a ton of info in the plant forum on this site and lots of knowledgeable people. :)
