    Jimbooo's Vision 450 Journal

I've no experience with Aponogetons. I guess they'd survive a brutal pruning session. Bulb plants are normally very good at recovering due to the massive nutrient reserve in the bulb. Me? I'd replace with C. balansae, Cyperus helferi or Vallisnera nana. But that's me - not you... ;)

Thanks. I think my wife is worried I've began another road to obsession - photography! I am lucky to be mates with Neil Hepworth, the PFK pro photographer. He's giving me some lessons in the New Year.

    Ember And Rio Meta Tetras

Thanks. I'm spoilt with fish choice, as my LFS is Maidenhead Aquatics, Crowland. One of the best shops for FW tropicals in the UK. The tank is coming along nicely. You can see its progress on the PFK blogs. There's on every week covering the tank's progress. Here's a fairly recent photo...

    Triplus/triton Look A Like

Interpet now have built-in reflectors in their Tripus and Daylight tubes. I don't like them. In Juwel and Hagen ballasts they are 90 degrees off i.e. the light isn't directed downwards. I also question their effeciency. I emailed Interpet about this and they have ignored me, on several...

    Triplus/triton Look A Like

These have a very similar spectrum to Triplus - http://www.lampspecs.co.uk/Light-Bulbs-Tubes/Aquarium-10000K Gro Lux have more red, less blue. Plants will grow in almost any light, if there's enough. Mixing spectrums is good for growth and colour rendition.

How Often To Amano Shrimp Shed Skin?

Amano shrimp shed quite regularlyl IME, especially if they're well fed. Dead shrimp look totally different. They often will look an opaque pink colour. Exoskeletons are transulecent.

    What Defines A Planted Tank?

I wrote this recently for a publication - So what is a planted aquarium? Put simply it is an aquarium that contains predominately live aquatic plants. The plants are often the main feature, along with the fish that provide essential movement, colour and interest. An easier way to put it – a...

    Planting Glossostigma Elatinoides

Seperate it into individual plantlets (two leaves either side of the stem) with sharp scissors and plant with tweezers. It will take you ages but will carpet much quicker. Although quicker in the short-term, planting bunches will encourage vertical growth initially and a carpet will take much...

Please Recommend A Tropical Plant Encyclopedia

Peter Hiscock's book has only small section on individual species. Most of the photos are emersed form. A waste of cash if you're only after plant info, IHMO. Tropica's latest catalogue is excellent and describes in details all the plants on their site. Cost is £2. The Big Dennerle Guide...

    Jimbooo's Vision 450 Journal

Most fish are fine with CO2 as long as there's sufficient O2 too. Torpedo barbs need higher O2 than some, so good surface agitation and flow are the order of the day. You'll go through more CO2 but it's a worthwhile trade-off. For me though it would be one or the other - angels or torpedos...

    Jimbooo's Vision 450 Journal

Planting looks nice. Torpedo barbs are super active and may put the angels off breeding. They prefer high flow too, where angels don't. Tetras are better suited for angels IMHO. Same continent too (mostly). Good luck trying to blag stuff from Juwel... Arcadia are going to be supplying T5s...

    Help With Co2 Please

More plants... Get some easy weeds to start with. Hygrophila polysperma, Limnophila sessiflora etc. Try covering at least half the substrate. You'll need a pressurized CO2 system for your size tank. The Dennerle kits are great. You can fit a 2Kg fire extinguisher to replace the 500g...

Do You Really Have To Change The Lights After A Year?

I say Zoo Med Ultra Sun 6500K, Arcadia Freshwater, JBL Solar Natur or Hagen Life-Glo. Triplus are too purple IMHO. OK if mixed though. Internal reflector is U/S for most ballasts though. Same for new Interpet Daylight.

    Java Fern Help

They look diseased mate. Remove the affected leaves and hopefully new healthy leaves will grow. For the others - Java fern can't have too much light. I'm growing some very well in 3.6wpg HO T5 in a 65 gal. It also grows emerged in nature, so is used to much higher lighting than we can provide.

    Tom's Ada 40cm

Thanks for sharing, Tom. It looks great. Are you using regular airline? You should consider using CO2 proof tubing, as regular stuff leaks. I'll bring some to Sparsholt when I visit next if you like. PS you can save £££ on getting dry ferts for starters...

    Co2 Indictors

No. The pH of the solution in the CO2 indicator is exclusive to the tank water because of the air gap between the tank water and the CO2 indicator solution. The CO2 gas that transfers from the tank water to the tester, through this air gap, alters the pH, thus giving you an accurate...

Yes, I moved it. I took it out completely a while ago to run an external. Then put it back in. I just fancied it on the left. No other reason really. Maybe I like left to right flow, like writing... BTW the Dec issue (out 31st Oct) of PFK magazine features this tank and explains its...

    Alex's 150l

I really like it. The hairgrass is beautiful. How often do you prune it? Have you ever thinned it out? Do you get traces of algae amongst the blades of grass? I normally do, due to low circulation down there. The only tank I didn't was my nano, because there was 16x turnover! Good...
