Small 5.5 Gal Community Tank Stock

Another fish keeper friend of mine prepared a 10G stocking list with compatible fish for a 10G tank. I have a copy of her article on my blog. It should help give you some ideas. http://goldlenny.blogspot.com/2007/03/hail...cking-list.html

    Filters Or No Filter?

Filtered tanks are almost always better than unfiltered tanks. Bettas do not like too much filtration. Unless you have too much filtration it is probably just a coincidence that your Betta's in the filtered tank have fin issues. Most male bettas do not get along very well with other male...

    Cycling Not Working?

Yeah. I would do a 50% PWC with pre-dechlored water and then test your ammonia levels again. If they are in the 4-5ppm range, then let things run until you see them start going down to the 1ppm range. Then start re-dosing with the plain ammonia ONLY up to the 4-5ppm range.

    Question About Fishless Cycling

Don't go with too much filtration since it's a Betta tank. They don't like too much water movement. If you use a little inventiveness, you should be able to do some kind of surgery on your existing filter so you can dump out the charcoal while preserving the rest of the filter cartridge. I've...

    Cycling Not Working?

8ppm ammonia is too high to start off with fishless cycling.. IMO. That level actually hinders the growth of the N-bacteria. Most fishless cycling instructions recommend 4-5ppm because of this. The carbon should have been removed from the start as well. Also check your pH and KH levels.

    Nitrites Vanished

Test your pH and KH. I've seen where people with low KH water and the nitrifying bacteria consume all of the KH and when it runs out they start to crash. You can try doing a 25% PWC which will oftentimes jumpstart it again... BUT you need to know what your tap/source water baseline is anyhow...

How Do I Know When I've Rinsed It Enough?

You would be able to smell any risidual bleach if there is any. The other thing you can do is fill it with water and add a triple dose of dechlor and letting it soak for an hour or so... but I've always just used the smell test once I rinsed it several times.

    Question About Fishless Cycling

Yes, keep the filter running but take the carbon out. You are using the plain ammonia method or another method? Do not add any plants until you have completed the fishless cycle. The plants would get burned by the high levels of ammonia used in fishless cycling. Remember that Nitrates are...

Airpumps And Airlines Need Help Setting Up?

The suction cups they often give you are not very effective for long term purposes, just sticking to the glass. I have a 24" long weighted bubble wand along the back of my tank and I also use some of the lead-type live plant weight strips and wrap them around the airline hose in several spots...

Rate The Stock Of Fish Above You

Is this a thread where you want someone to rate your stocking and then the next person to post would rate my stocking, so on and so forth? If so, edit your post to show what kind of "armored catfish" you have and then I'll edit this post to reply if that is really what you are asking for.

    High Nitrate Levels

How high are they? Nitrates are the end product of the nitrogen cycle (ammonia>nitrite>nitrate) and you should be doing frequent 25% PWC's to keep them at a low enough level. You should also be checking your pH, KH and GH since they will usually go down as part of the natural processes of the...

    Compatibility Chart - Community Fish

I saw that a few of the programs on that page were listed as Freeware but there was no indication on the "Can I Keep It?" and "More Can I Keep It?" programs. Do you know if they are? Are the programs updated with new definitions as information changes and new fish species come into the hobby?

    Question About Activated Carbon

If you do regular filter maintenance and weekly 25% PWC's (partial water changes), you can get by without carbon but if you want to go longer between PWC's, you could use a more advanced chemical filtration product like Seachem Purigen which is 500% more effective than carbon. The small filter...

    Pond Fish

Based on your measurements, your pond is around 800 gallons. If you don't put a full fledged filter system on the tank, you should at least put in a fountain or waterfall and then you could make a DIY pre-filter for the pump which would also provide mechanical and biological filtration for the...

    Algae Shrimp Molting

You are right that they could be molting. Shrimp often will molt when being moved into a new tank or even after a water change. Are they in a shrimp only tank or a community tank? Heavily planted? Have you tried feeding them anything yet? My shrimp stay busy in the plants but if I drop a...

    Plant Fertilizer

One other thing I wanted to add. I originally had hornwort in my 10G tank with the cherry shrimp but with the more reading that I did, I decided to pull the hornwort. Hornwort puts out an allopathic chemical that inhibits algae growth. While this is a good thing in a "normal" planted tank...

    Trumpit Snails

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=75554 They usually leave live plants alone and spend more time in your substrate eating dead plant matter and left over fish food. They'll also eat algae. Overall, not a very bad snail compared to common pond snails. IMO, they do not breed as...

Scaredy Cat (coleus Canina), Cat Repelling Plant?

How big is your pond? Do you have gradual sloping edges or deep cut edges? If you line the perimeter of the pond with decorative bricks or rocks it would make it very difficult for a cat to be able to reach down into the water to get to your fish. http://www.fishpondinfo.com/mammals.htm I...

    Ghost Shrimp

Maybe the shrimp molted and you are seeing the old shell? When they molt, they will go into hiding until their new shell hardens up. If one of your fish ate the shrimp, you would not see anything that looks like a shrimp in their poop. Their digestive acids would disolve the entire shrimp...
