So when i eventually get around to putting fish in my pond, i want to help protect them from the local cats in my area where i live. I was researching varies cat repellants and i came across a type of plant called "Scaredy Cat, Scardy Cat (Plectranthus caninus) (Coleus Canina)" which numerous sites on the internet have claimed can keep cats away from gardens as they detest the smell the plant creates;

Anybody heard of this plant or have any experience with it? Apart from protecting my fish from cats, it would also be nice to have the plant to help protect the birds that come to feed in my garden and generally help deter cats from pooing on my garden lawns.
If this plant works, it would be really awesome, as i don't want to use chemical cat repellants (because i want the garden to be wildlife/environmentally friendly, and i don't want such chemicals getting washed into the pond) and i don't really like the sound of the electronic cat repellant things.

Never heard of thAT PLant but you can try puting mesh over the pond or fencing it of..

Ah i really don't want to do the mesh thing, so i'm trying to find alternatives to that right now to help keep cats away from the pond.

Do you have that much of a problem with stray cats?

I've never had that problem before but of course, I had a dog that would be out in the back yard on a regular basis. He never went in the ponds, amazingly, since he was from a family of hunting dogs... but he sure would chase away anything else that came in the back yard. I've read that some people have problems with their dogs going in their ponds and mucking things up though.

Yeah there's loads of cats where i live, its like every one owns one on my street- i'm not sure how bad the cat vs fish problem will be in my pond when the fish are in, but a neighbour of mine who kept goldfish in a pond up until quite recently said he had a lot of issues with a particular cat in the area who plundered a lot of his fish once, so i just want to be on the safe side.

How big is your pond? Do you have gradual sloping edges or deep cut edges?

If you line the perimeter of the pond with decorative bricks or rocks it would make it very difficult for a cat to be able to reach down into the water to get to your fish. http://www.fishpondinfo.com/mammals.htm

I also read that Marigolds will deter most mammals, including cats so you could plant them around your pond.

Or a catnip patch somewhere away from your pond would draw the cats to the catnip where they'll quit worrying about your pond. LOL

Lots of floating plants so the fish can easily hide.

Thanks for the tips GoldLenny, the pond has kinda steep edges to the pond and i've planted some lillies in the pond so far amoungst some other pond plants and i will try and bulk out the planting more in the pond- if i can get hold of some of the scaredy cat plant i think i will try it out though as it looks like it could be interesting :thumbs: .
Never heard of marigolds doing deterring cats though, i may give them a try too :thumbs: .
