I guess that means an ammonia spike is less likely, but def worth checking before you spend money looking into other fixes!

Have you a test kit to determine the level of ammonia? If not then your LFS can probably test your water for you. If it's a new tank then this is very likely to be a problem, if it's fully cycled then it's still a possibility.

I hope you've not got dwarf gourami disease in the tank, but would hold off buying any more until you are sure that it is not this causing the problem. If it is, there's not much you can do about it unfortunately, I lost a few gourami due to this - really upsetting.

Ah, that makes sense, thank you. I leave them on for a similar amount of time as I did have on timers, it just means that I am there when they are on!
