You have a very different priority than many of us Mhancock.
I use timers to give my planted tanks a consistent amount of light for good growth....
Mhancock, your first post read as if you only wanted the tank to have light when you were in the room and you were using the remotes to save bending down to turn them on.
What Old man was referring to is lots of people use timers to control their lighting to ensure a natural cycle as most try to ensure the tanks do not recieve direct sunlight which leads to algae problems. Therefore timers can make sure that the 6-10 hrs of light the tank recieves in the day is on a cycle to match their enjoyment. Not judgemental just different, your tank your choice on lighting.
