So pleased it is getting there! You'll know when it the cycling is complete as the ammonia and nitrite levels will both be steady at zero

I hope you enjoy your new tank! One safe way is to have two heaters, so if one stops working the other will carry on. This will not prevent overheating, though.......

Do they need live plants?

I certainly would only change one part of filter media at a time, never all at once! Re the algae, keeping the tank in the dark with no food for a couple of days should help. It may be that with summer coming (!) your tank is getting lots of natural light as well as the 8 hours of bulb light.

Mine go hyperactive from time to time! Can I check that you have a few of them and not just one?

Just before I order some assassin snails, are there any compatibility issues with swordtails, corys, cardinals or betta, and do I need to take into account their bioload regarding stocking or is it small enough to be negligible? I have a 55 litre tank and was thinking of getting 5 of them...

For more colour: male guppies, male dwarf gourami, cardinal tetras, rams, kribensis, opaline gourami, swordtails. All compatible as long as you have the correct ratio of males:females where applicable!

With some large water changes you should be able to sort that :)

Complete guess, but if some sort of algae then keep the tank in complete dark for a few days and don't feed? I'd suggest waiting until someone else comments as that is, as I say, a guess!

Maybe (just guessing) the bacteria that breaks down ammonia was more sensitive and effected more, and the bacteria that breaks down nitrite more resilient?

Sorry no idea, other than suggesting that you medicate sick fish in a hospital tank rather than effect all of them with the meds. The smaller volume tank will also mean that you need less.

I know that Mollies like brackish water so some aquarium salt may help, not sure if it will help the neon but if you follow the directions on the pack you should be OK. As one of the neons is also struggling there may be a problem with the water, is the tank fully cycled and is the ammonia...
