he's been laying on his side, barely moving for 2 days now...moves every once in a while to get air, and enough to make his food float up some so he can eat without getting off his side...new pictures in later post...

Tank size: 10gal
pH:6.4
nitrite: 0
nitrate: 20
tank temp: 81F

Fish Symptoms (include full description including lesion, color, location, fish behavior): We went on a day trip and all our fish were fine when we left. When we got back late last night, our DG, "Sparky", was laying on the bottom of the tank, and was gasping for breath. I searched for a bit to see if I could figure out what was going on but didn't find much. I used the net to try getting him to move around, and he was swimming head down, on his side, upside down, and just about any other crazy way you can think of. I eventually found that it might be a swim bladder problem, and that having him in more shallow water can help give him a chance to recover. Normally we would put him in the 5gal quarantine tank and drop the water level of that for him, but we got a new dwarf african frog that died in there from something just two days ago, and I haven't had a chance to get it cleaned out yet. Right now, he's in a cup similar to what a lot of Betta's come in, which I hate having to do because it's not much space at all, but at least he's able to keep himself upright and get air in it. I have tried twice now to put him back in his tank, and each time he's done alright for a few minutes, then starts struggling again before ending up back on the bottom of the tank.

Volume and Frequency of water changes: 10gal, about every week to week and a half

Chemical Additives or Media in your tank: We have a bio-filter, and use water conditioner on our tap water. Other than that, we don't typically have anything in the tank. Due to some PH issues a few weeks ago, we have recently used PH+ in small amounts. The tank has some decorations and plastic plants that have been in use for about 2 years, and a rather large live plant that I can't remember the name of.

Tank inhabitants: 1DG, 1 African Dwarf Frog (was 3 but over the last few weeks we've lost 2), 1 zebra danio, 1 leopard danio, 2 ottoclinius

Recent additions to your tank (living or decoration): the otto's were added just over 24 hours before the DG was found on the bottom of the tank

Exposure to chemicals: minimal

I was going to suggest Dwarf Gourami Disease, but the fish looks OK.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

M :)

He actually seems to have recovered...he's back in the 10gal tank, and is swimming almost normally. He seems to get a little off balance every once in a while, but fixes it fairly quickly. He spent about a day and a half in that cup, but with how he was swimming, I honestly don't think he would have made it if I hadn't kept him in there. Hoping he continues to stay upright!

Great news

Unfortunately, he seems to be bouncing back and forth between doing well, and struggling again. He is back in the cup, and currently upside down as he can't keep himself upright. He is trying to flip, and I have flipped him myself several times, but he just can't stay that way.

Anyone have any other ideas on what might be going on with him? Or any ideas on what I can do to help him? We are quite fond of Sparky, especially my girls, and I'd really like to help him get better...

Here's how he looks right now, his stomach looks slightly sunken in, if that helps at all with ideas...

Both of my Dwarf Gouramis are doing this but they're in separate tanks :/

They were bought together, so I thought it was just old age.

The female looks healthy in appearance, the male has gone dark on his face / underside. He also had a hole in his fin & an abrasion on his face which has almost healed after a few water changes.

He's lying completely flat on the bottom now but will move to eat. Weird!

I'm sorry you lost your fish. Mine's still hanging on, but he's not looking very good. I picked up some Metro-Pro, our fish store told me it would help with any parasites causing the swim bladder issues. But while he swims much better now when he does, he's physically looking worse-less color, grey areas, and spends most of his time on his side at the bottom of the breeder I picked up so he at least would have a lower speed of water movement, and a shorter distance from the bottom where he's laying to the surface for air. Helps with his stress because he's not being netted at least once a day to lift him up and let him breathe. I've got some more pictures-anyone have any ideas? I have to go out of town this weekend and I'd really like to be sure he's going to do alright while I'm gone...
