First time fish, something went wrong

Welcome to the Forum! I am sorry to hear about the loss of your Betta. :( It is hard to tell in the pictures if there were any signs of illness prior to the fish's passing, as the picture is blurry. At first I thought it looked like he might have had some white spots on him (Ich), but then I...

    Heater question

I think that a 100W heater would be too much for a 5 Gal tank. You probably would want to go with something like a 25W heater.

My new Betta/ shrimp set up

Elodea is an invasive species in some areas of the US, I am not sure about Europe.. You would have to check your local regulations... All I know is that in many States here in the US, Elodea is Illegal to sell and transport.

My new Betta/ shrimp set up

In some states here in the US, Elodea is now prohibited because it is considered an invasive species. So, you can't buy it in some states now. I used to teach HS Biology years ago (when I lived in New Hampshire) and I used Elodea (bought at a pet store) for a Lab Experiment on Plant...

    A baby!!!!!

Congratulations!!:good: I had Platys years ago and one or some of my females gave birth. I didn't even know it had happened until several weeks later when I saw miniature Platys swimming around in the tank. There were only 3 of them. The rest were probably eaten, but I felt lucky that some...

Sand vs Gravel - Which is easier to clean and maintain?

It is good that you have time to research before setting up a tank!! It is important to do your research and carefully plan out your tank and what fish you plan to keep. You will be glad that you did, as it can prevent a lot of mistakes and headaches for you down the road. Be sure to really...

    stocking ideas

Yes, Seachem Prime is a Dechlorinator and just like fish, ADF need dechlorinated water. Yes, duckweed will be fine, in fact it may make the ADF feel more comfortable having some "cover" at the surface of the water, as well as help with removing Ammonia from the water. You may, however, want to...

£15 for 10kg of fine sand

That is a pretty good deal.... You can get even more sand for cheaper if you go with Play Sand or Pool Filter Sand.... I got a 50lb bag of Pool Filter Sand for around $10.00 USD at Walmart.

Sand vs Gravel - Which is easier to clean and maintain?

I agree... I think sometimes people feel the need to clean the sand because you can visually see the fish poop and debris sitting on the surface of the substrate, especially on a lighter sand. Some people don't like the way this looks.

Sand vs Gravel - Which is easier to clean and maintain?

Both sand and gravel have their pros and cons. Gravel Pros: It is easy to clean/vacuum with out sucking out the substrate Some stem plants can grow in a gravel substrate with root fertilizer tabs (if you wish to have live plants) Gravel Cons: Uneaten food and other organic debris can fall...

    tank leaking

Just keep a very close eye out for mold or bacterial growth... Any amount of moisture can facilitate their growth. If the dry portion is dried out enough then you may not have an issue, but I would keep an eye out for mold just in case.

    This is complete TORTURE!

In my tank is a Large School of a newly discovered and rare South American Species... "Imaginatarii beautifularia" Or.... "I. beautifularia". It is so new to the aquarium hobby that it doesn't even have a common name yet, and just goes by its scientific name!! :p

    Hello!

:hi: to the Forum! Nice Looking Tank!! I particularly LOVE your Tank Stand. It is beautiful... like an actual piece of nice furniture instead of just a stand. Interesting fish species.

    5g tank re-scape.

Yep :/ ..... BUT... I do plan on getting a 10-20 gallon Nano tank setup down the road and I can see a small amount of dragon stone in the tank with live plants, some Ember Tetras, microrasboras and Cherry Red Shrimp. :)
  26. dmpfishlover

    5g tank re-scape.

That is a pretty good deal! I believe that what I found was more expensive online and then you would have to add shipping to that... So, oh well... I can always add some down the road.... Or, better yet, get another tank to "scape" with dragon stone!! LOL:p

New Hobbyist - Tropical Fish tank

Gotcha... You could still put a background on it if you want. Although you could only view it from one side then, I think you would find that the fish would be much more "relaxed" with one side of the tank a solid color like black, and be more likely to act "naturally" and less skittish.

    5g tank re-scape.

I love the look of dragon stone and I really wanted it for my tank, but I had a hard time finding it in any pet stores around me. I could have bought it online, but it was a bit expensive.

    5g tank re-scape.

Definitely looks more "tidy". Looking good! I like the stone. Is that dragon stone? I agree, some driftwood and a few more plants and it will be amazing!

    Sand substrate and cloudy water

It can take a while for the cloudiness to clear, depending on the sand. What brand of sand did you get? You can used play sand that you can buy at a hardware store, but it does require A LOT of rinsing. I have pool filter sand in my tank, and I rinsed it in a bucket, stirring it around with...
