    Ammonia Problems :(

Cleaning it during the spike probably set you back a bit as you're going to lose some bacteria when cleaning. In a healthy, balanced tank this isn't usually noticeable but with yours being on the fritz, didn't help :/ Have you checked the tap water for ammonia? Was the tank freshly set up 7...

    Ammonia Problems :(

I haven't ever experienced this myself but you do hear of tanks having ammonia spikes. Did you clean the filter recently? Maybe forgot to use dechlorinator after a w/c? Although I know there are some people who don't use dechlor at all...

    Ammonia Problems :(

Are there fry in the tank? They produce a lot of waste and it will take time for your filter to catch up. Maybe you didn't remove enough media from your main tank to seed the filter in this one? Can you take more out to put in this one? It's safe to remove up to 1/3 if I remember correctly. :)

    Ammonia Problems :(

.5 is not the end of the world if you caught it quickly and it sounds like you did. Have you been testing the water before each subsequent water change? Is it still rising each day? To how much? Don't worry yourself too much, from the sounds of it you have things under control and it will even...

    New Keyholes , 1 Dead

Hmmm seems strange for sure. The only thing I can think of is the acclimation. I always acclimate for at least an hour, adding tank water every 10 minutes. Does it look thin at all? Any darting or head shaking? Without any other symptoms a diagnosis will be hard :( Do you have any scaleless...

    New Fish Keeper Here

Just keep doing as large a water change as you can (until the first can just swim upright) until you get ammonia and nitrite to 0. You can do as many back to back water changes as you want without doing any damage as long as you dechlorinate and temperature match the water first. Those levels...

    What Is Better?

It's funny how everyone has different experiences with sand. I prefer sand for plants and for cleaning. In fact, I don't even have to clean the substrate of my current tank because the flow of the water is such that nothing is left sitting and it all gets sucked into the filter. If I had gravel...

    New Fish Keeper Here

Hi RMS, just wanted to say welcome to the hobby and let you know that many people end up in your situation but not as many do what you have to set it right so well done! Keep up the large water changes and get them into that new tank ASAP :)

Do I Need A Specific Temp For A Fishless Cycle?

Hmmm never seen one like that! Yeah I would get started anyway and fix the temp later. Another option for the short term would be to pick up a regular people or cooking thermometer from you local supermarket if it's bothering you :p
  14. Alm0stAwesome

Do I Need A Specific Temp For A Fishless Cycle?

Set it at 30c for cycling. You can just get it in the right neighborhood to start with and adjust it when you get a thermometer, it won't do any harm to change the temp a bit in a few days. If it helps, your tank water should feel slightly warm at 30 degrees as opposed to the usual 26, which...

Activated Carbon, When Is It Exhausted?

I was thinking more about carbon sponges. Of course it clogs up, that's what filter maintenance is for ;) Yeah, I did forget about floss, I change mine every 8-10 weeks. I'd never thought of using an internal or HOB for carbon, that's a great tip!

    Rockwall In Aquarium...my Bad

I may be wrong but I really doubt that's your problem. Varying amounts of the wool end up in tanks all the time as it can be a pain to get off the roots of plants, especially if the plant has been in the pot for a long time.

Juwel Bulbs Essential For Juwel Light Bar?

Yes, juwel were clever enough (and obnoxious enough) to make their bulbs a slightly different size so you have to buy from them.

Activated Carbon, When Is It Exhausted?

Only when it's falling to bits which only happens with sponges after several years. Ceramic media and bioballs, etc last practically forever :) The same goes for media in other types of filters as well - there's really no need to replace any media unless it's no longer fit for purpose. There...

Activated Carbon, When Is It Exhausted?

Thanks lock man, I've enjoyed doing some posting again :) That's good to hear because I really can't be bothered opening the canisters up lol. Even if it does remove some medication, I'm treating for flukes which apparently exist in your tank all the time but only become a problem if their...

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

You can usually get away with groups of 6+ which is what I have now. I had 4 when the bullying was going on and now have six, including naughty boy. The 5 in my main tank are getting along brilliantly so far. I suspect I have an unusually aggressive male on my hands which you sometimes get with...

Activated Carbon, When Is It Exhausted?

Hello folks, today I added a first dose of medication to my tank. I didn't remove the carbon from my filters because I figure it's used up by now and won't do any harm. The carbon in one filter is about 1.5 years old but the other is only 6-7 weeks old - what do you think? Stop being lazy and...

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

Just thought I would update on what's happening with these angels. They haven't improved at all, they haven't really gotten worse but the slime coat is slowly thickening as the days go by. Because they have been showing signs of stress for a week now, I decided to go ahead and treat the tank...

I don't really get what you mean? All you need is a mature filter, the glass doesn't matter. You would just need to pinch some mature media from your other tank and you're ready to go!

    Has My Threadfin Got Parasites?

Haha, a while back I was looking for an old thread and I had a click through some of my posts when I was just starting out. I was just the same as you lol. Has My Threadfin Got Parasites?

I wouldn't worry just yet. They have been under stress from being moved plus you never know what they were fed at the fish store which may have resulted in white poop. Just keep an eye on them and see how they get on.

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

Well I obviously want to keep him but if he won't exist peacefully in my tank then he'll have to go! Separating him and increasing the size of my group is the last ditch effort, after having already increased the size of my tank. What will be, will be!

Best Schooling To Mix With Bettas

Rasboras are always a good bet. They are a good size and not nippy at all. I don't recommend micro rasboras however as they may get eaten. Something like espei, Harlequin or hengeli rasboras would work really well. My personal preference are for espei rasboras, sometimes called lambchop or...

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

Well I still have the male angel in a "timeout" tank so I can put him back in at any point. It was always my intention to try putting him back in but I wanted to give my new angels plenty of time to settle in before attempting it, especially as they are so small. I actually don't think this...

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

Thanks for all of your input, I may be wrong but I don't think water quality or other fish are the problem as the tank is pristine and the female marbled angel is now the dominant fish in the tank now that the male is gone and she was first to start showing symptoms about a week after I removed...

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

From what I've read, with white/blushing angels like these, red lines like this are a sign of stress however I can't imagine what would be causing it. If anything they should be under less stress as 2 weeks ago I removed the dominant male as he was bullying everyone apart from his mate, which as...

    Possible Parasites? Advice Needed!

Yep here are the photos now, let me know if you need any more. Now that the lights are on I see they have what I can only describe as an evenly spread matte finish to their bodies now. Could this be a slime coat build up? It's not fuzzy looking. You can kind of see it in the photos.
