Fine sand, Unipac Limpopo. The substrate is very clean, there is never any poop or detritus visible - I think this is because it's over filtered and I don't have any hardscape to block flow.

One more question! I use Purigen filter media which I'll obviously need to remove while treating the tank. Will the media itself be ok to take out of the tank and put back in when treatment is over? I'm not sure if letting it dry out will harm the purigen at all. Feels like a silly question but...

mmm no I wouldn't separate it from the bulb. If you want multiple plants, safest bet is to buy multiple bulbs IMO

If it were me I'd swap to an external/canister filter. You can move all of your current media into the trays of the new filter and you're done :) With a tank your size an external filter is pretty normal, 29 gallons right?   I'd recommend the Marineland C-160 or C-220, they are the US equivalent...

Have you checked aquaessentials? I just bought some giant vallis from there for £3.50 a pot. The plants arrived in good condition and a nice size. 

Are there any professional pet sitting services in your area? Where I live you can get someone to come in and look after your pets while you're on holiday.
