    Working In an Aquatics Shop

Have you considered becoming a vet that specializes in treating fish? Vets with that expertise are sorely needed and you would be able to help fish rather than have to witness their improper treatment. You could even work for the government in the branch that handles the overseeing of fish...

    Corydoras unknown death

Would plants on the substrate still be able to get sufficient light with a cover of floating plants? The cories enjoy milling about in the plants substrate level.

    Corydoras unknown death

One problem for me is that since cories prefer dim lighting it severely limits which plants I can successfully keep in the aquarium, and the ones that do well in those conditions are definitely not the fast growing type. I wouldn't think that all of the plants in the aquarium would have to die...

    Corydoras unknown death

I think the tricky part for me would be knowing how many fish I could add without overwhelming the plants’ ability to break down the ammonia they produce but I guess you get a feel for that after a while. You would have to be experienced with growing aquarium plants too. The last thing I would...

    Corydoras unknown death

I’m not sure if I just missed it but I never saw if you added an ammonia source in while you were “cycling” the tank with the plants (e.g. fish food, prawn, or liquid ammonia). Just making sure because if no ammonia source was added no cycling would take place.

    Betta chunk missing please help!

Sorry to be picky but I wouldn’t say it that way. Water is the opposite of antiseptic. It pretty much always promotes bacterial growth. More accurate to say water changes will reduce the bacterial load in your tank naturally by dilution. Solid advice though 👍🏻

Another cycling question - I have ammonia and NitrAtes but no NitrItes

Is the pH the same in both tanks? I’ve heard that the pH being too low can cause the cycle to stall. Could be different if you have decor in your main tank that is absent in the quarantine tank.

    Sick dwarf gourami

Hopefully it’s not dwarf gourami disease because if so your other one would likely have it too. The only thing that would indicate that though is that it was in fact a dwarf gourami. Other than that not anything to suggest that’s what it was.

    Cory ID

I noticed that too. Maybe it was the part about what the OP does with the two fish doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things cuz I can see some people being upset by that statement.

    Cory ID

You can use science to an extent for a topic such as this (for example to provide evidence that a particular practice is detrimental) but ultimately science can not be used to provide an answer here because it’s a question of ethics and everyone’s ethics are a little different and no more valid...

    Filter nightmares...what's yours?

Another one would be a couple of weeks after buying kuhli loaches one of them disappeared and didn't even come around to feed. I had heard you have to be careful about them getting into filters so I checked and sure enough he was in the filter reservoir and would have been in there for a few...

    Filter nightmares...what's yours?

I used to have the Tetra Whisper hang on back filter and the impeller would keep malfunctioning. I would have to turn off the filter during water changes because the water level would drop too low and when I would turn it back on afterwards a lot of times it wouldn't start back up. You could...

Dragonfly Carapace in my Gym Tera tank?

By the size of it I'd say a damselfly. I used to collect the shells left behind from the dragonflies and damselflies in my pond.

    How to do garlic

Well it’s not like you’re going to overdose the fish with garlic. If they still aren’t eating the food try adding a little more. I think the OP’s intention was to add praziquantel to the food too and the garlic just to make the food more appealing.

    How to do garlic

You can use garlic powder (for cooking) if you have that. So long as no other additives. Not sure of the exact ratio but a small pinch for a Tablespoon of food should work.

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

Agree 👍🏻 Am I correct in assuming it’s a double-edged sword? That there’s many more species available now at the LFS than there were decades ago but the fish are often more sickly due to poor breeding practices and the stress of shipping halfway across the world?

Frustrating advice for newcomers to the fish world

I totally agree with you. The problem is that most people have a very hard time telling the difference between opinion and fact. Hardly anyone on here (or in life in general) says “in my experience” “I believe” or “I’ve found that”….instead they state everything like it is a fact, even if it’s...

    Ooooh...don't touch that fish, it's diseased/inbred/etc.!

Unfortunately with Iridovirus in gouramies you can’t always tell that there is anything wrong with the fish. It can be present in a fish for months without any symptoms, which is one reason it is such a problem. It’s so hard to know which fish have the illness. Even if you quarantine the fish...

    Ooooh...don't touch that fish, it's diseased/inbred/etc.!

I’m sure disease in dwarf gouramies due to poor tank maintenance does sometimes get blamed on Iridovirus when actually it isn’t. It happens with everything else in the hobby so why wouldn’t it happen with Iridovirus? My gouramies’ illness was not due to poor water quality though. I maintain my...

    Striped kuhli loaches

I can’t say for other kinds of loaches but the kuhlis get along fine with the cories (peppered and sterbai) in my setup. Might be another one of those situations where it just depends on a number of interacting factors whether it works well or not. Probably the more kuhlis you have the more...

    Striped kuhli loaches

If you have the option to switch out to a 20 long you could have both. I’ve had 8 cories and 4 kuhlis in a 20 long for 8 months and they are all doing well. My kuhlis are the type you see a lot of in the tank but I’ve also had the kind you barely see and I agree with anewbie it’s pretty hard to...

    This is a strange one....

Yes metronidazole is good against anaerobic bacteria but also for some parasites (mainly amoeba and protozoa). However I don't know if these parasites are the ones I would be targeting. (I'm a pharmacist btw) Edit: removed nematodes/trematodes as I could not verify it is effective against them

    This is a strange one....

Thanks for your advice guys. I guess my biggest fear with just watching and waiting is what if there are more of these things inside some of the other fish in the tank? Not all of them are as big as my girl Remus so while she can handle losing some tissue some of my smaller fish might be taken...

    This is a strange one....

That’s what I’m thinking too 😫 I think I’m gonna treat the whole tank since whatever was in there is in the main tank now but I don’t have much experience with parasites. I’m thinking of trying General Cure (mix of metronidazole and praziquantel). I’ve heard it’s okay to use with cories and...

    This is a strange one....

Thanks for the reassurance. It’s definitely good that it doesn’t appear infected. But I can’t help but feel that a hole in a cory’s belly is an ominous sign 😬 It doesn’t seem like it would be a good thing that causes that. I just want to find out if it’s a parasite or something that I should...

    This is a strange one....

Yes there are 2 male peppereds. She has spawned a few times but it has been a while. No new fish additions in about 10 months, and those were quarantined first. Just live plants that I add periodically (I do a bleach dip on them first).

    This is a strange one....

Hi guys, I have a female peppered cory, Remus, (named before I knew she was a girl) that is about 4 years old. I noticed an unusual shaped lump under her belly a few days ago and thought maybe she was constipated so I withheld food for a day and then fed a pea the following day. When I checked...

    Ooooh...don't touch that fish, it's diseased/inbred/etc.!

The biggest challenge would definitely be the cost involved. That sort of cost would be manageable if the research is being done for human illness. In that situation once a safe, effective drug is found the investors are likely to recoup all the money they invested and then some. Sadly, this...

    Ooooh...don't touch that fish, it's diseased/inbred/etc.!

Any idea of how long the virus can survive without a host in tank water/filter media? For instance if you have a gourami in the tank that dies from Iridovirus how long would you need to wait before you could put another in the tank without having to worry about the new fish contracting the virus...

    Ooooh...don't touch that fish, it's diseased/inbred/etc.!

There was definitely a problem with Dwarf Gouramis and Iridovirus here in Hawaii several years back. Suspected egg in tank

Oh ok those aren't cory fry. You're probably correct that they are guppies. I honestly have no idea what that egg vs fungus thing is. Just that it's not a cory egg. Maybe someone else will be able to shed some light.
