Just Curious About The Description Of This Forum?

I saw that. I didn't mean to copy and those aren't necessarily my views or beliefs, I just thought that it was getting off topic a bit. That's all I could really think of. lol I wonder how many people that are against hybrids have Discus or plan on trying to find one in the lfs?

    Oscars

I'd get sinking food. I'm against feeders unless absolutely needed because of the diseases and worms they may have. It would be good to have more than 1 food for him anyways. If you want to wait him out and make him come to the top, it will probably only take another day or so. He won't...

    Baby Piranah...

You do whatever you like. :) I'm not trying to tell you what to do just giving an opinion to help is all. I have no hard feelings if you think differently or in your case don't have the option to change anything right now. No problems at all. The rule of thumb for rbp's is 20 gallons per...

    Your Opinion

By Black rhombus I'm assuming you mean Black Rhom? Serrasalmus rhombeus. That's what I have right now and the picture I showed. They get huge and are probably only outsized by a manueli. When juvi's they are very shy and skittish but after a while they will come out of their shell and you'll...

    Oscars

I would keep the lights in the tank off for the 1st day is all. If it's dark in the room, that's fine and probably better for him. Tomorrow, just do everything normally as you would so he can start getting used to your routine such as when to expect the lights on, feedings, people traffic etc...

    Oscars

That's normal. It sometimes takes a few days for some fish to get used to their surroundings. If it's the first day, don't worry about feeding him, keep the lights off and don't bother him. Make sure the temp is warm enough and wait until tomorrow. After the first day, do everything as you...

    Large Fish?

Miss Wiggle covered it pretty good and better than I would have probably. First let me say that I wouldn't think you're trying to dispute me by asking what I mean. As you seen above, I was under the wrong impression and was wrong about which fish to advise you on so I'm glad you asked. :)...

    Large Fish?

He edited his original post and says he only has a 60g which isn't big enough for an Oscar. Oscars definitely have a great personality though. You also shouldn't generalize piranhas based upon one species of them. ;)

New To The Site And Cichlids

Welcome to the site. :) Everything sounds normal. :good: I rarely use a bubblewand but when I do they love playing in it. It's not harmful. New fish, and sometimes established fish, will often go up and down the glass. They are probably just checking out their new home and seeing where all...

Do I Need To Turn My Filter Off When Doing A Water Change?

I leave mine on whenever possible. Luckily I can do 20-25% wc's before the water gets low enough to stop the suction. When I do large scale wc's, like 75%, I have no choice but to turn them off.

    Your Opinion

No problems Nevergone. :) I understand what you mean and thank you. There are quite a few people that are doing the same thing and many that are much more involved than I, for which I know I'm grateful for. Like in most cases of animals, the good that we hear about is vastly outnumbered by...

    Baby Piranah...

Congrats on getting a piranha. :) Can you tell us what kind? If it's a Pygocentrus nattereri (redbelly, I'm just assuming because they are the most popular) it would do good for the lil guy to have at least 2 more with him and I'd suggest getting 4 or 5 to start out with but not in the 5g...

    Large Fish?

That may just be a temporary thing tho. If you wanted to spend some money you could get a sanchezi and definitely keep it in a 65g for life.

    Bucktooth Tetras/exodons

I don't have any now but have had them and getting some more soon. I love them. They are miniature killing machines in a community setting tho. Very active and fun to watch. The-Wolf is spot on.

    Large Fish?

For some reason I thought you had a 75g tank. I don't know why and you even posted your tank size in your first post. I guess I assumed with you wanting an Oscar that I could go with fish that size. You wouldn't be able to get any of them, including the Oscar as all those fish need a 75g...

    Your Opinion

Wow, I really appreciate that very much, Lisa. I'm really glad that there are some here like yourself and those who have posted that are interested in at least learning about piranhas, even if they never want them, at least you'll know what to believe and not believe about the myths. These are...

    Large Fish?

Oscars are great fish. If that's what you'd like you would be making a good choice. They have more personality than any other fish. A piranha would be pretty expensive so that would most likely be out. Try doing a search for Flowerhorn, motaguense, Red Devil, managuense. A red devil is an...

    Large Fish?

The main thing for cichlids is the width. Height doesn't matter so much unless it's Angels or Discus. Are you willing to have 1 main show fish and nothing else if it's too mean? Or would you rather have something not aggressive like an Oscar that will allow tankmates in most cases? You can...

    Your Opinion

You make an excellent argument here. I'd love to hear others opinions on this also. Your last sentence is exactly why I even posted in this thread. There were a couple of other threads like this and I stayed out for the most part but my favorite fish is the piranha and I'm sitting here...

First I want to say thank you to CFC for bringing this thread back and spending his own time to make it a better thread for all of us. I asked him what happened to it and he said it got out of hand, he could have just left it at that, and had every right to, but he went out of his way to clean...

Need To Know What Kind Of Fh

I think he's a beauty! He's got a lot more aqua in him now. I like his red fins too I'm surprised you can have that batch of fish together. I would have thought they'd try to kill each other. Thank you for letting me know. :good: What size tank is it?

Inches Of Fish For 55gallon Water Changes

I agree, it's definitely worse at a higher pH but any pH over 5 and ammonia is toxic to some degree.

    Purchasing Convicts

I disagree and it definitely is. BTW, if you want to get nitpicky and technical then, bagging the fish together doesn't matter at all and convicts don't breed with everything nor does every male and female put together breed with each other. Far from it. Removing cichlids that are a pair at...

    Flowerhorn Has Egg's

In a situation like what you're in, you can take the fry anytime after they're free swimming.
  29. G

    Purchasing Convicts

Giant Danios would be too quick for convicts. IME, with cichlids is a good idea to have dither fish with a breeding pair. It helps the pair bond as they have something in common to do, protect the fry, and the male will usually not attack the female or at least not as bad with dithers in there.

    Loyal Fishies

My cichlids always did that also. They only liked me and they hated my dog even tho she was as much a fixture around them as I. They also were very keen with the color of clothing I was wearing too.

    Breeding Stingrays

Ok thanks guys. I've always read that it's only been done a couple times so was unaware of that. Thanks for the info. :good: Hey Mojodex, we could go steal his aquarium and each take half?

Female cichlids also sometimes have a nuchal hump but you're right, it is another indication to generally go by. :)

    Purchasing Convicts

they may be paired up at the store but once you take them out and put them in yours there's no guarantee it will continue. If they are small, which I assume they are, I would get 1 male and 3-4 females and let them sort it out. Take back the other females after a pair is formed. Giant Danios...

    Help Needed Fast!

By chance do you have a quarantine tank that you can put him in to keep the lights out and help him be stress free? Pop-eye is usually a symtom of another problem like TB, dropsy or a bacterial infection. Using a broadbaed OTC anti-bacterial med will usually cure it. Someone from the UK will...

Just Curious About The Description Of This Forum?

Yea, I agree that it might happen in nature in very rare cases. I was just more or less quoting what I hear from the cichlid faithful as to some reasons they don't like hybrids. :) But thank you for backing me up in case I didn't know or for those that might have thought that. I appreciate it...

Just Curious About The Description Of This Forum?

There are many long-time aquarists that are against hybrids. They would like the lines to remain pure and feel that hybridization isn't normal, doesn't happen in nature, makes the fish less healthy and less beautiful and if kept up there would be no pure fish remaining. It's an extremely...
