    Green Terror Fry Mystery

What filtration do you have? I'm sure it's a sponge filter and you know what you're doing but wanted to ask is all. I doubt very much all of them would get sucked up in the same night but trying to think of other possibilities.

    Oscar

It would help if you could list the specific Africans but in general I wouldn't. They have different dietary needs (of which the Oscars diet can kill some African cichlids) and in most cases the African cichlids will be more aggressive and when larger the Oscar may consider them food.

    Lfs

The perfect advice right here. :good: A different Oscar and GT and this may have worked great but these particular two didn't work out well.

Had To Return My Oscar To Lfs :(

Sorry to hear that. Oscars are great fish but you did the right thing for all of the fish. You never know until you try.

    Green Terror Fry Mystery

Fry are at their most vulnerable at night, even with the parents protecting them. I wouldn't go by the fact that because they are alive for a few days that they will always be. My piranha will sometimes let other fish live for days weeks and even many months (when I would try to see about...

How To Move A Large Pacu

For my tankbusters I use a net to guide them into a pail. Never had any problems and they don't seem to mind it much once inside of it.

    Green Terror

The "true" Green terror is smaller only growing to 8" average and the CF grows to 12". The "true" GT is much more aggressive than the "false" GT.
  8. G

    Green Terror

I believe that's the only way to tell for sure but not 100% positive. Getting a true GT is very hard and probably impossible at an lfs. Jeff Rapps would be a good place to look. At one time, he was the only one in the US that had true A. rivulatus. Last I knew the false GT was called A. CF...

    Oscars Are The Greatest!

Oscars are the greatest wet pets of the aquarium world. They're so adorable and one of the few non-aggressive fish I would ever keep. The more attention you give him the more he'll demand. lol Don't overfeed tho. :) (I know you know that, just saying) He'll be about 10" in a year. Feed a...

    Exadon Paradoxus (bucktooth Tetra)

What size tank? You should have many more together than just 2. They really are vicious fish. It just may take more than 2 days for them to get settled in.

Why Is It When You Go To Lfs None Of The Fish Fight?

Stressed and overcrowded. Most takns are more or les bare so they have no territory boundaries and nothing to fight for.

    Canisters And Oscars

Thank you for the reply. Sounds like you have a great setup there! :) With the fish I keep, you can't add sponges and tubing to their environment as anything new they will rip to shreds. Turnover is definitely less important than filter effectiveness if you have to have one or the other but...

    Distinguishing 2 Similar Species

That's a festae. The smaller spot and also the vertical bars right behind the head touch. A Uro's bars are completely vertical and never touch and the spot on the tail covers more. It's been so long (years and years) since I've had a festae or even seen one in person. Makes me jealous. Uro's...

Where Do You Buy Your Fish, Food & Equipment?

I buy almost all of my fish online at Shark Aquarium or Aquascape. Food I buy almost exclusively at the grocery store with a rare exception at the lfs for baby fish. Equipment I buy almost exclusively online at Big Al's. More than half the price cheaper than anywhere else in stores or lfs...

Letter In Pfk, 'experts' Ignore Oscar In 125 Litre Tank

How many piranhas and what type are they? Well, at least they prevented a quick death for the Oscar but without stating that 33 gallons is too small for an Oscar, he'll die a slow death. I would think that if someone doesn't know you shouldn't attempt to put anything with piranhas then they...

    Oscar Question,

Seeing as this is just a couple days I'm going to say this is normal behavior, especially for Oscars. They love to pout and sulk. If he was acting good for many months and this started happening I'd be a little worried but not since he was just removed from his old home and into your tank...

    Distinguishing 2 Similar Species

The other forums are correct that the only 100% way is the spot on the tail. I'm excited to see and also see if it works out for you. You'll have a much better chance with a female festae than a male, that's for sure. Looking forward to the pics if/when you can get them. I hope you post back...

    Distinguishing 2 Similar Species

NP. :) It will be very hard to judge by the colors especially since they are at the lfs, which most fish won't show their true colors in that environment. Like I said earlier, generally, festae are a brighter color but that's not the case 100% of the time and shouldn't be used as the only...

    Distinguishing 2 Similar Species

Ok, just letting you know. Female festae are sometimes as aggressive as males and even more aggressive than males when breeding. They do grow slow in comparison to other large cichlids. The 8" until they are aggressive is a myth. I hear a lot of people say that but they're wrong. It's true...

    Distinguishing 2 Similar Species

There will be a lot of pics on Google. Just do a search for festae. BTW, a 75g will be way too small for a festae, jd and pleco, imo. I've never had a Jack Dempsey before but have had festae and they are very very mean and nasty fish. I think the festae would almost certainly kill your JD...

    Tiger Barbs

I think a 20g is a tad small for them. Basing this on the fact that they are nippy and need to be kept in groups of 6-8 or more so they will nip at each other more than the others. I'm not aware of any diffferences betwen the sexes and the green ones are the same as the orange and black ones...

    Distinguishing 2 Similar Species

I agree with Aprilia997. The tail spot is only on half the base with the festae and the whole base of the tail with the Urophthalmus. Not always but in general, the festae has a much brighter red coloration than a Uro. I wouldn't use this as a definition of the two but moreso as one factor in...

    Canisters And Oscars

I agree with Lisa. For tankbusters like my red mota's, haitiensis, umbriferums, piranhas etc. I always have a minimum filtration of 10x. I shoot for 15x generally. I think that was the same line of thinking Tolak was going for, if you could answer his question it may help a lot. :)

    Empty 10 Gallon

Thanks stang1. What's a fighter tank? Are there different betta types? Can you hand feed Bettas? Do they like plants or rocks etc? I've always had a bunch of tanks that I literally risk losing fingers and hands every time I vacuum or enter it, I'd like 1 nice and sweet tank to play with and...

    Empty 10 Gallon

What are some basic facts about Bettas? Temp, food. Are they ok alone forever? (I don't like tanks with a lot of fish in it making it look too crowded or too busy) Are African Dwarf Frogs ok with Bettas? Oh yea, I've had crayfish before, forgot. Good suggestion and they are cute lil buggers...

    Empty 10 Gallon

I recently inherited a couple tanks. A 10g, 29g and I also have a 55g. In the 29g I'm going to get a Serrasalmus sanchezi and in the 55g I'm getting an Serrasalmus irritan. I'm not sure what to put in the 10g. I'd like something that can live in it for life. I'm going to be getting 2 more...

Is It Just Me Or Do These Tanks Multiply?

lol No kidding. I used to have quite a few tanks and wanted to knock it down some a couple years ago so I was giving 10g, 29g and 55g tanks away. About 12 total. I gave a 10g away last week (now I am where I want to be with a 75g and 2 55g) to a friend who has a little kid who had a 5g and...

I haven't had much luck with canisters. I gave up on them a while ago but some swear by them so there has to be something about them. They just aren't for me, I guess.

What's Your Views Of Wild-caught Fish

Excellent point. That pretty much sums it all up for me. :good: We ALL have fish species that were wild caught so if you own an aquarium with fish in it, you would be pretty hippocritical to be against wild caught fish now. :)

    Frontosa Cichlid

A lot goes into how fast fish grow. Genetics plays a huge part, water changes and diet also play a large part. As far as cichlids go, they are extremely slow growers, though. It can take a couple years for males to grow from 2" to 7-8" and females may even only be 4" or 5" in that time span...

Bala Shark & Black Shark Question.

Nice! I hope you show us pics. Personally, I like "evil" fish. :good:
  38. G

    Frontosa Cichlid

Male fronts can get to 16" and being carnivores their main diet is fish. So having it with small fish might not be a good idea. They aren't aggresive at all to other fish but can be to conspecifics when breeding. I've never seen or heard of any aggressive Fronts before, at least.

What's Your Views Of Wild-caught Fish

Do redtail black sharks breed in aquariums? I'm not sure of that but I've read somewhere that they are all wild caught. There are probably a few more fish we take for granted that are wild caught. So be careful before you say you're 100% against it just in case that's true. I know there are...
