I recently inherited a couple tanks. A 10g, 29g and I also have a 55g.

In the 29g I'm going to get a Serrasalmus sanchezi and in the 55g I'm getting an Serrasalmus irritan.

I'm not sure what to put in the 10g. I'd like something that can live in it for life. I'm going to be getting 2 more tanks this year, a 125g and 220 or 280g but would like to keep this tank and not have to upgrade the fish. I've only kept piranhas, large cichlids, Mbuna and rtbs, tiger barbs, zebra danios and serpae tetras for the most part, specializing only with piranhas and large cichlids.

Only a couple requirements...

1. Has to live in there for life.

2. Has to be nice and not bite when I put my hand in the tank. Maybe even handfeed but that's not important.

I'm thinking of African Dwarf frogs or a betta?

How about both or will the frogs bite the betta?

Can anyone tell me about nice peaceful fish for a 10g or about ADF and bettas? Even the basic care, nothing is too small. I have no knowledge of peaceful fish at all so any help will be appreciated.

If you have any questions that I haven't listed please ask.

Thank you. :good:

What are some basic facts about Bettas? Temp, food. Are they ok alone forever? (I don't like tanks with a lot of fish in it making it look too crowded or too busy)

Are African Dwarf Frogs ok with Bettas?

Oh yea, I've had crayfish before, forgot. Good suggestion and they are cute lil buggers but they will probably attack anything small enough to put in a 10g. :)

Bettas will be perfectly fine on their own. I keep mine at a temperature of about 26C.
I feed mine flake, pellets, bloodworm and daphnia.
I'm not sure about African Dwarf Frogs as I've never kept them but I have got 3 Ottos in one of my fighter tanks. They take no notice of each other at all!

Thanks stang1. What's a fighter tank? Are there different betta types?

Can you hand feed Bettas? Do they like plants or rocks etc?

I've always had a bunch of tanks that I literally risk losing fingers and hands every time I vacuum or enter it, I'd like 1 nice and sweet tank to play with and show off. :)

bettas are fun fih nice but non community they are also know as fighters (simease fighter fish) they have a wonderful display and wont try and bite your hand off

Sorry, a Siamese fighting fish is another name for a Betta.
I don't hand feed my Bettas but I know other people do. I tend to have a couple of plants and each of my tanks has an ornament of some sort just so they have somewhere to hide.
You haven't got to worry about them taking your fingers off as they are quite friendly little fellas! I have a yellow one, Legolas, who flares at me if I go near his tank but he's fine when it comes to cleaning out his home. ;)

I hand feed my Betta, Lawrence he's sort of getting to the point where if I don't practically shove it in his mouth he wont eat it :) He's so lovely.

Have a look at the German Blue Rams, they're just beautiful. Also Rainbow Fish are gorgeous too, especially the Boseman.

Oh and I forgot (hence the edit) my Dwarf Gourami also eats from my fingers too, feels funny

ADFs and bettas will most likely be fine together. Just make sure you actually get ADFs and not ACFs (african clawed frog). You can thell them apart by their toes. ADFs have webbed toes, ACFs don't. Also, ADFs really are better in groups. For a ten gallon, I would say 6 ADFs and a betta would be pretty good. Sometimes a betta will try to attack an ADF if it's a particularly mean betta, but usually they won't. Also, ADFs can be tough to get to feed at first, and they are slow hunters, too, so make sure they get a chance to eat and that the betta doesn't get all the food.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I really appreciate it. This community stuff feels like a foriegn land to me.

Jozlyn, I'll definitely look into your suggestions, thank you. :)

n3ont3tra, excellent info, I appreciate it very much. One question, do the ADF's sometimes starve because they won't eat?

Ehh... I suppose it could happen. Most people feed either frozen or live bloodworms and they take them. I actually bought 2 ADFs yesterday. One escaped because my water level got too low and the top of the CO2 diffuser was out of the water. He must have hopped out because I can't find him anywhere. The second is doing okay, he hasn't eaten yet, but I don't have bloodworms at the moment. Just make sure you're prepared. Also, I'm keeping mine in a 10g with some shrimp.
