Pretty sure that is a sign of poor genetic or general health actually. I've occaisionally had guppy fry that had tails like that, they usually didn't survive long. Could also be that it is crossed with a feeder, never know. Doesn't look like an Endler cross to me though.
My male guppies seem fine together. They chase each other around sometimes, and often do what I call a 'love train' lol where one chases the other who is being chased by another being chased by another lol. Otherwise they get along fine :P. Thanks for the compliments :).
Convicts aren't livebearers so this is probably the wrong section.
Also, if you have mixed sexes of convicts in your tank they will pair up and become territorial when they spawn. Your other fish will become targets. The Silver Dollars are going to get large enough to potentially eat your...
I know lots of folks here love Endlers and I finally got them to stay (relatively) still enough in the right light with the right background to get discernable pictures :P.
This is a picture of my most mature Endler tank. Not the most crowded but our largest are in here, as well as our...
Ive heard of convicts getting on in very strange situations, but personally, my 2 pair of 2 inchish cons couldn't play nice in a 55 gallon all by themselves. Ended up having to divide the tank, and the cons always insisted on laying their eggs right by the see through divider so they spent most...
If you cover the intake, be careful to clean the covering object off every so often or it will clog and ruin your lovely new water flow :). If you want the sponge there to keep its beneficial bacteria you can just rinse it carefully in tank water (I prefer taking out some tank water in a pitcher...
Personally only had good experiences with AQ filters. I only have one penguin biowheel and I got it with a used setup. It actually works fine too, although it produces a really hefty current which I can't adjust at all. One thing I would mention though is that an AQ 70 would be overkill for your...
I use the power bars with switches too. I have almost all 22 tanks on two different bars with only the ones that arent in the same area being on different switches. For those we generally tilt the heaters since most of ours are now fully submersible anyways. For the tanks on bars though we just...
Something else I forgot to mention is that you should always turn off your heaters before doing a water change. If your heater gets too hot out of water and colder water hits it your heater may crack and then it is toast.
An Arowana is the type of fish that anyone who has one knows what it is, or finds out very quickly. Any lfs would have to learn something about them just to feed the buggers so chances are he either saw that pic online and was curious, or saw a similar fish in a store and found that picture for...
I maintain 22 tanks, and as such water changes are a big part of the hobby for my roomie and I.
This procedure has worked for us for the past 7 to 8 months with no problems, but I would not suggest that will work as well or at all for everyone.
First and foremost is the python. Hook that...
No, it is impossible for your lines to be contaminated by moving a sponge filter. It is possible that you could however, transfer bacterial and/or parasitic infections.
If every fish in the tank died overnight youre looking at something really serious I think, not just unbalanced nitrates. If it was the chemical balance killing the fish itd be a slower process where htey got sick and died but not all together all at once. The only way the nitrates could have...
Your first female passed...did she look pregnant? or was she just fat? Did you ever see her poo? She didn't look huge but probably halfway through term. I dont recall if I'd seen her poo recently. I will keep an eye on the current female to see if she does. We feed a good mix of staple, live and...
Hi folks, I have a 20 gallon tank which up until two days ago housed 9 guppies and a female platy. Our problems actually began a few weeks ago I think when we had 10 guppies in there. We had 3 males, 7 females and our one female platy. Theyd been together in the tank for going on 6 months. One...
Feeding baby brine shrimp will both increase their growth rate and the rate at which they colour up. I feed mine small amount 4x daily, cut back to 3x a week and a half to two weeks in and then cut back to twice daily when they look like mini adults.
I believe the trait is derived from crossing Endlers with guppies since Endlers also display the black spots or bars and most guppies with them look Endlerish.
If you're willing to do it, you'd be surprised how many fish can be sold online using sites like kijiji and craigslist (although with craigslist you have to be sneaky about selling live animals). I haven't yet tried to sell any guppies yet but the fish I have put up for sale received tons of...
Those are guppy happy spots :P. They appear when your guppy wants to show off to the ladies. My Rosy barbs do the opposite and lose their black spot when they're happy.
Egg layer fry are much more difficult to rear but much more rewarding in the end. Zebra Danios are a nice beginner egg layer, so I wish you good luck with them :).
If you're already putting fry in metal buckets you should probably just let them birth in the tank and let most of the fry get eaten or you will be overrun with fry that you have nowhere to put.
I have successfully kept a pair of cons in a 20 gal for a while. I moved them out to a 55 gal with another pair but the tank is divided 60/40% so each pair only has roughly 25 gallons. The two females lay eggs within hours of each other like clockwork every few weeks by which time all of the fry...
If you dont have seperate tanks to grow fry out in, and don't want to get into that, let the fry roam as they will and let nature take its course. Otherwise, be prepared to amass a collection of tanks.
Mature, growing clumps of java moss make an excellent source of microorganisms for tiny fry to munch on. My rosy barb fry survived entirely off that until they were large enough to eat bbs.
As long as there isnt something wrong with your guppies they will give birth to 10 - 40 fry every 28 days. If you allow them to birth in tank you will lose many but some may survive. You likely had one give birth and the other will within a short time if she hasn't already.
I was just wondering if anyone has done this before with positive results? I am looking to raise some brine shrimp and I was told this is the best starter food for the babies once hatched. Ive had some shredded lettuce sitting in a 2l bottle filled with some conditioned tap water and a bit of...
If it is a small tank with little cover they may just be eaten before you notice. That or you may have really poor water conditions. I assume you are correct in stating the sexes of the fish so you arent stuck with all males.
When we want to establish a new sponge we just put it in one of our larger more crowded tanks and let it run with the one in there a few weeks then we usually move out the older one to the new tank. Never had any problems under this system and by always having extra sponges going we never have...
I have about 300 fish. In the last 6 months I've lost one neon tetra shortly after purchase and one guppy who died of still unknown reasons, maybe age. I'd say if you aren't changing anything in the tanks except the water then really you shouldnt expect many losses at all. My established tanks...
My platy's first two broods were huge also. She's been without a male for several months now though and the last two broods were much smaller. Once she stops dropping fry we're going to see about finding her a mate.
