Can I Mix Africa Cichlids With Convict Cichlids?

Nope, while young the convicts would be bullied or killed by the Africans (I'm assuming your're interested in mbuna from Lake Malawi), once a couple of convicts paired off to breed they would turn the tables and bully the other fish.

I used to have a convict with a huge oscar (double convict the size) and they got along. I think you can as long as you have a big enough tank for them to hide.

But, Oscar's arent African Cichlid's. So there is a difference on size, temperment, water preference's, temp, and so fourth.

In my communal tank right now i have 3 electric yellows, two female convicts and two lombardis. The elecrtic yellows are two boys and a girl. The girl is the oldest. The lombardis are a boy and a girl. They all get along get. The male lombardi tends to be a bit of a nudger and a chaser but the others all swim around fine. Our tank is a 4ft and when they get bigger we will seperate them but they all get along fine right now

We did have two girl and two boy electric yellows but one girl died suddenly and im still unsure as to why. I think she got nudged one to many times

Well i just cam from a friends today and he's amazingly got a tank of aferical cichlids, lab's, mel auatus, and other nasty fish yet their are 2 convicts in there and livving happily!!!!

I'm not advising to do it as i dont belive in it but course some are happy and will do fine like that!

How long has your tank been set up with those fish and have they all reached sexual maturity? Mbuna are usually quite peaceful as juveniles, but all that changes when they're ready to start mating.

Ive heard of convicts getting on in very strange situations, but personally, my 2 pair of 2 inchish cons couldn't play nice in a 55 gallon all by themselves. Ended up having to divide the tank, and the cons always insisted on laying their eggs right by the see through divider so they spent most of their time trying to attack each other through that to no avail. From what I understand though, if you want to try mixing them and you also want male and female cons in the tank, you should add them last and have allowed the other fish time to build territory. Keeping the tank crowded with fish also reduces aggression. As soon as cons start feeling like any area is theirs, you have problems.

My tanks been running for around 12mths. The convicts, electric yellows are both mature. We only have girl convicts which i think makes a difference behaviour wise. I was given three Blue Rams today which are also in that tank. Two girls a boy. They are mature aswell. I did yesterday have to seperate our male lombardi from the rest of the tank because he was taking on other fish and they werent coming out on top. The lombardi was death rolling them... So i am trying to find him a new home because I dont have a spare tank. I already have three tanks in my lounge! And he's occupying my baby/fry tank right now. He's the biggest fish out of all of them. He wasnt rough with the others when he was lil but now over the last three months he just picks at the others one by one. He's currently pacing laps of the tank he is solo in. The electric yellows spend most of their time foriging for food and hiding in the plants. My tank is heavily planted which i thinkhelps aswell because they all have their own lil areas. I wouldnt have them in a tank smaller than 4-5ft though because they wouldnt cope with a smaller one. They all love interaction aswell. Whenever i walk past they come to the front and say hi. They all swim together and follow my finger and play with my fingers when i dip them in the water.

I guess its because theyve all been together for quite a bit of time now thats one of the reasons why they get along. The Blue Rams are doing good for only going in there today.

I do actually chat to our aquairium guys before putting new fish in there. I ask about habitat, temperament, their natural life, food, and compatability with other fish etc. We dont just put them all in together.
