I realised at tea time yesterday my platy had squaerd off and I thought she was about to drop
I put her in a breeding trap and went to a childrens party
When we came back we noticed at least 8 dead fry in the bottom (mother attacked them or the angel were nipping the net from the other side)

I fed the other fish and turned the light off, an hour later there were 19 live ones so I put them in the hospital tank
Woke up this morning to find 30+ more :hyper: eekkkkkkkkkkk lol

The other half must have removed mum before I got up but she's still laying them in the big tank

Sorry to blabber on this is my first time with Platy fry hopefully they aren't hybrids they should be mickey mouse if my wigtail hasn't had his wicked way with her

Congratulations on the fry. The initial fry were probably born dead, aborted. This is common when using breeding nets. It's not always the case but the stress can cause fish to abort the fry.

Thanks
I thought that was possible until I saw her attacking them but as soon as the went off she then stayed calm

My platy's first two broods were huge also. She's been without a male for several months now though and the last two broods were much smaller. Once she stops dropping fry we're going to see about finding her a mate.

She was probably not attacking them. She was trying to eat them. That's what they do. They eat their fry. The reason you don't see a lot of dead fry in breeding boxes and nets is because they're normally eaten pretty quickly. Unless you get to witness the birth or shortly after, you won't see the dead or weak ones around very long.

Well done on saving so many fry. I have been nurturing 10 baby platies in my breeding trap for the last 5 weeks and decided that today was the day to release them into my main tank. I put them into the tank and watched in horror as my Angel fish ate some of them. I felt really awful. I thought that they were too big for the Angel to eat, seems I was wrong!

Aww bless

Well they'll have to stay in the breeding net till the weekend when I can go and get another tank
I have guppy (4 weeks old) in the tank they are in but the guppy could possibly eat them

Will they be ok till Saturday do you think???
