    Play Sand Acceptable?

Play sand is idea, but it is almost impossible to get it perfectly clean. However after a couple of days of filtration it will clear. I would recommend using a bucket to clean sand or gravel in. Ian

    Crossbreeding Cories?

If you only have one or two of each species then the chances of hybrids will be high. My suggestion would be to make sure that you have both sexes of each species you buy and if possible buy at least 4 of each species. Ian

    Confused About Species

If the eggs are in a clear jelly as you say then it is almost certain that they are snail eggs. I don't know any fish that lays eggs in a jelly. This is a picture of some of my juvenile Gold laser Corys, They are classed as a variety of C. aeneus, but are actually closer to C. melanotaenia. Ian

    Rate My Sand

It is not as fine as I would recommend for Corys, but it looks perfectly OK to use. I would recommend a fortnightly session with a gravel cleaner to make sure all uneaten food particles are removed. Ian

    Panda Cory Emergancy

If the bulge was due to a bacterial infection I would have expected there to be signs of inflammation, but from the pictures I see no reddening, so I would guess that the fish has a parasite and would treat for such with Flubenol-15, if it is not a parasite the treatment will do no harm at all. Ian

    Confused About Species

From the pictures I think that your original fish are C. melanotaenia and the eggs in jelly will almost certainly be snail eggs. Ian

    Cory`s And Temp

    C. gossei, C. seussi, C. adolfoi and C. duplicareus are all species that like the warmer temperatures. Many others will tolerate being in warmer temperatures but in the long term it would be detrimental to them. Ian

    Blue Panda Corys

Its quite simple really. The only way the blue dye will show on a fish is if there is something on the fish for it to stain. For example, if you have a perfectly healthy fish, but it has picked up some fin damage and you give it a dip in Meth. blue it is only the damaged edges of the fins that...

    Corydoras Pulcher

This is Corydoras pulcher When Isbruecker & Nijssen, 1973 described C. pulcher there was a second species within the same population, which they thought may be a colour variation, this species has two central body stripes compared to C. pulcher's single one. It is also shorted in snout length...

    Barbels Gone.!

JohnG, It may be that your tank will be more than suitable for the Corys, I would just keep an eye on them and watch for any reddening around the mouth, if they are feeding OK and active I would think that they will be fine and providing the barbels have not deteriorated right back to stumps...

    Im After......

I am curious as to why you want more females in your groups than females. the normal ratio is 2 males per female. Most of those species are available at Wholesale Tropicals in Bethnal Green. I have both C. sterbai and C. weitzmani young, but these would be for collection only. Ian

    Barbels Gone.!

A couple of questions, were the barbels intact when the Corys were introduced and how long have they been in the tank. Obviously infection preventative treatment is recommended, but I would try and ascertain the cause of the barbel reduction so it does not happen again. There are two main causes...

    Gravel For Cories

You made the profound statement "Contrary to popular belief, cories dont need sand - they're fine on rounded gravel" well if truth be known the don't need gravel either, but that would bring in a whole load of other issues which is not what I want to do. All I was trying to point out was this...

    Cory Company

Just to separate the so called emerald Corys, her are a couple of pictures. The first is Brochis splendens this has 11 rays in the dorsal fin. This is Corydoras aeneus the "Bronze Cory" clearly showing how it got it's name form the colour of weathered bronze. This species is easy to tell from...

    Gravel For Cories

My point was that the natural feeding action of Corys is one of filtering food particles from the fine substrate they naturally live on and it is unnatural for them to be using their barbels as shovels to move gravel. Whether they appear to be happy or not gravel is unnatural to them. For the...

    Gravel For Cories

I have to disagree, although you may be right that they don't need gravel, but it's is not their natural substrate as I have already posted here http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=181819. Advice On Which Cories To Choose

Firstly 75 gal means absolutely nothing to me, it is the footprint of the tank that determines the amount of fish it can hold. Having said that I would suggest that the species to look for, for a tank with those temperatures would be C. sterbai; C. gossei; C adolfoi or C. sussei, these species...

    Can I Get Pygmy Corys?

The tank gallonage means nothing to me, I work on the foot print or if you like the surface area. This is the main factor which determines the tanks capacity. Having said that I have kept and bred a population of about 15 C. pygmaeus in a 18" x 10" (surface dimension tank for the last 14 years...

What Age Would Peppered Be Fully Grown?

You say fully grown, what sizes are they in SL (Standard body length). C. paleatus like most Corys will live a long time given good conditions and diet. To actually be able to determine their age would be a virtual impossibility. Ian

    Wrong Substrate For Corys

This is a subject that crops up all the time and there ought to be a sticky for it. However lets just look at what Corys are normally used to in their natural habitat, basically sand, silt, sometimes clay, sand and pebbles/stones, but very rarely would they encounter gravel and never at all...

Take A Look At My Cory

The first Cory (C. trilineatus) looks like is has some faint red patches forming on the upper body. To stop this from getting any worse and to combat the snout fungus looking problem, I would do a large water change and treat the tank with a recommended dose of Melafix. BUT be sure to add at...

Does Anybody Have A Picture Of A Really Big Cory?

One of if not the biggest Corydoras species is C. robustus, the largest member of my group measured 105 mm SL. (4.25"). Which Kinds Will Interbreed?

The 'Bronze' and 'Albino' are in fact the same species Corydoras aeneus. If you have species groups of Corys together and there are both sexes in each of the species groups it is most unlikely that there will be any cross breeding. It is only when people buy one of this, one of that, and one...
