    Artificial reef for freshwater?

It would look awful in my opinion, just think it might look something like a reef tank to begin with, but then you add the fresh water fish and it looks wierd. Then you'll get some green algae growing on it and it will look even worse!

    KNO3 supply in Uk

I've found it quite hard to get hold of, probably due to the other uses it has. I have a link that you can buy 500g for £2.60, but their postage is like £7.50 for all orders I think, so you need to buy a lot to make up for it.

I use Waterlife Haloex, that is, if we're talking about the same things. I used it when I first started with tropicals years ago and it kinda stuck. :)

    Nitrate Test Kits

Depends what test kit you get I guess, i've always used the Hagen liquid ones, work fine for me. As for your tank starting to cycle, you should be testing for ammonia and nitrite too, and check your tapwater to see if it's the same as what you get in the tank. HTH

I hate it when people don't listen...

You shouldn't have lost any bacteria, seeing as he cleaned it out in the tank. It could've been worse, I was expecting you to say despite the bucket he went and cleaned them under the tap. ;)

    tiger barbs

I've been told that usually when in groups of 6 or more they keep to themselves rather than pestering others.

OK well thanks for all the help, I will test again this weekend and possibly add a few danios. :)

    Deleted, lol this is confusing.

    Hooray?

So if I add more fish slowly would I be able to get by without the ammonia/nitrite spiking? I wouldn't want to put more fish in the tank only to lose them to a spike of ammonia. Might it be worth noting that I did originally have 3 platys in the tank but lost 2 of them after a few days (this...

    Hooray?

34g US About the plants - thats what I thought might be happening. How can I get the tank to cycle if the plants are sucking up all the ammonia - would the bacteria still develop?
  15. C

    Hooray?

It's been running for nearly 3 weeks with a single platy in there, added a lot of real plants after 1 week. I feed the platy a couple of flakes every other day.

    Hooray?

Ordered some test kits the other day (NH3, NO2, NO3), and they arrived this morning so gave my cycling tank a test, and I got 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite and 5mg/L Nitrate. Then I tested the tapwater to check and that was 5mg/L too. So i'm thinking it's either finished cycling or its between the...

Want to have a planted tank

You can't prevent it, adding CO2 will naturally drop the pH of the water. The best thing to do is keep a steady supply of CO2 to keep the pH stable, this will be less stressful to the fish than a constantly fluctuating pH. There are tables in the sticky at the top of this forum that show the...

Want to have a planted tank

Some of the bags are labelled foreground/midground/background, the names are labelled on all of them though. I just sorted them into height and planted the tallest at the back. :) The ech tenellus...

Want to have a planted tank

The small leafy plants in the foreground were labelled as pygmy chain sword, as for the ech tenellus, you can't really see it, but it's on the gravel directly infront of the dark red plant on the left, theres also some to the left of the corkscrew on the far right. :)

Want to have a planted tank

I had the same collection and I never had a lot of plants the same. I had a bag labelled Ech Tenellus and its contents were a lot different to the bag labelled pygmy chain sword. The pygmy chain swords were just like small sword plants, but the ech tenellus was like a grassy plant. I also had...

    My other pets

Had the chinchilla for just over a year now, not had any problems. They're nocturnal so he's usually only awake in the evenings/mornings, in that picture i'd just woken him up, he looks half asleep hehe. He likes running about the house when I let him out, the dog doesn't seem to want to do...

Nice, top one looks a bit fat! :D Can you adjust the ISO speed on your camera? If so try playing with that, it may reduce the grainy-ness. :)

Want to have a planted tank

Could someone PM me the links for the DIY CO2 injection too? I've read the article on the main site, looks pretty easy to setup to begin with, but i'd like to read about how much to put in etc. Also, I got the 30" collection from Java plants in my tank, am very pleased with it, they have all...

    stocking guide

I've always thought that there was a rule for the surface area of the tank rather than the amount of water. As you can keep a lot more in say a horizontal 50g tank than a vertical one with a lot less surface area. IMO: In my opinion.

    Herbie and Gonzos first pics!

Aww, hermit crabs are great, I used to have one aaages ago but I lost it because I couldn't find any suitable shells for him. :(

    What is this?

Yeah was well hard getting the camera to focus on that and not some bit of dirt or something, still not focussed properly but good enough. ;) Saw him again while doing a water change, so he's gone now. :)

    Tiger barbs

Ahh well that's good to hear. Tigers, neons and corys for my tank soon then! :)
  39. C

    What is this?

The one platy is fine. Look at the worm thing coming out the end of the bit of plant, not the plant itself hehe. ;) It looked like it was using the bit of plant as a kind of shell, because it was dragging it along as it moved up the glass.

    What is this?

Just spotted this on the front of my tank, was gonna take it out as I don't know what it is, but when I went to get it, it was gone. :/
