I've been having problems with my filter recently (fixed now though so I don't need advice on it :p) and this morning my dad decided to try and sort it out himself.

I was in the room with him since I'd just done a water change, I filled up a bucket with tank water for him to put the filter in and I watched.

So... despite what I've told him about filters he still manages to annoy the heck out of me. First, he disassembles my filter... nothing I'm too annoyed about since I do it myself on a weekly basis. Then he dumps all the parts IN THE TANK... getting loose rubbish into my freshly changed water. I grabbed them out and put them in the bucket and told him not to do it again.

I went out of the room then for a few moments... only to come back to find him washing the filter pads IN MY TANK. So, I had a go at him for it and he started freaking out and stomped out - leaving me with a tank of brown water. So I had to do one HELL of a water change to try and clean it. There's still quite a bit of rubbish in my tank but it's much much better than before.

Urgh...

So all the stuff you filtered out he put right back in the tank.

He has an interesting interpretation of the word "filter".
yup... I was far from impressed about the whole thing.
I got to him before he totally cleaned out the sponges so I should have a load of bacteria still in my filter.

The tank is looking better though, still slightly murky so I have to change it again today.

And yeah, he does have fish experience - he used to be in charge of our coldwater tank.

You shouldn't have lost any bacteria, seeing as he cleaned it out in the tank. It could've been worse, I was expecting you to say despite the bucket he went and cleaned them under the tap. ;)

He did want to but I told him the filter needs to be cleaned in water FROM the tank. Not IN the tank :p

I'm still making him feel guilty about the whole thing... if I keep this up until the weekend I might get some fish out of him

I concur, what he did was far from ideal, but an awful lot better then it could have been!

>>> he went and cleaned them under the tap.

I was expecting similar!

Hi ladynaoko :)

Now that it's all over and done with, why not look on the bright side of this? You are soooo very lucky to have a dad who is, at least, willing to try to help.

Fishkeeping is one hobby that parents and children can enjoy equally and this need not change as the years go by. The effort you put into teaching him about how to do things right, and the reasons why we do things in certain ways, will pay off in the long run. You can look forward to a lifetime of shared companionship with this hobby.

Does he know that you're a member of this forum? If not, why not show him some of the threads you've posted on? Perhaps he'll want to join too. :D

he knows I'm a member but he's 100% computer illiterate :p
He doesn't even know how to switch it on!
