I just started an OLD black and White movie, Sergeant York. Haven't watched in a long time and it is awesome. Sergeant York is one of those rare movies that is based on actual events and is historically correct. Before Alvin York and his family signed off on allowing it to be a movie they insisted on full control of historical accuracy. York was awarded the U.S. Medal Of Honor and the equivalent from France.
York was the rare TRUE hero. The Medal Of Honor came from taking out an entire German machine gun nest by himself. His commanding officer found that the most remarkable thing about it all was that he did it to save lives, not take. He felt that the guns were going to kill a lot of people and shut it down to save those lives even though he started as a drunk, then found God, and then failed as a objector. He actually didn't take out a lot of the Germans but just put them in a situation they could not win.
After the war he was being escorted by, I think, a senator, around Washington and was offered many high dollar, for the time, endorsements. He asked the senator if the offers were because of what happened over seas. When the answer was yes he refused and asked to just be allowed to go back home.
I should add that the first half of the movie has nothing to do with WWI but, rather, his getting to the man he became. It literally took him being struck by lightning to wake him up.
Here seems to be a YouTube video of the whole movie. Just watch it. If nothing else it is inspirational.
Remarkable man and truly the rare true hero.
