Tyler's 29Gal. Tank Project!

This morning they are what appears to be sleeping/swimming sideways near surface.Interesting. lol But they are certainly alive.

Its ok this is normal for them, until they wake up. Nice looking Clownfish, 30mins is a bit too short for me. I do it over an hour and half. In a few weeks/months they may squabble a little due to them deciding who is to be the female! It’s nothing to worry about.

Ya, I went looking up "clown fish sleeping habits" and it seems most sleep the same way, some on the sand, others in hosted corals. I love clown fish, we have planned on having them from the beginning. We may be done stocking, we would only have room for one more fish if any. I am very happy with my tank and from here on maybe only small additions of a toadstool and some other softies like yuma ricordea type stuffs. I love it!

Thanks for looking everyone.

So my bigger clownfish is picking on my Green Chromis =( chases him around every 30 seconds. Pain in the butt.

Still same thing. I will continue to watch. It is not constant, but it keeps happening. What would be my course of action if it persists?

A drastic solution is to remove all three fish, rescape the tank, and then add the fish again.

Other options would be to isolate the bully for a bit in a trap.

Chromis should be kept in groups, if you cant get any more i would take it back. It isnt fair on the fish!

I would need at least 2-3 more and I do not believe I have enough room for that many?? =( had him like 3 months now. I wish the clowns were not so mean. Rearranging would not do much as the clowns barely know the tank. they swim out front only.

Also ALW: I read several times that chromis do ok as single fish? I was hoping mine would be one of them, as it is a beautiful fish and a great tank mate.

Yellow goby was chased once and the clown fish wishes he hadn't cuz the goby put him in his place. That only happened once.

Really pains me to say this, but this really sucks that the tank is unhappy.

Would you say adding 2 more would be enough? Or should there be more like 4-5?

They only get to be 3 inches according to Liveaquaria website. Hmmmm, may be an idea...

It's only a 29g tank though. I don't want you to be overstocked. Hmmmm

In all fairness to you, I've read this information online about the chromis as well, though it's not in any of my actual books. This is the same problem I had with the chalk bass. People had only ever kept them alone that they never thought to think of them as a social fish, which as it turns out, they are.

Is there anyway to take the clowns back or no?

I will get no return credit for them. It would be a total loss. I am still however interested in schooling them... I do plan to upgrade the tank to at least 75Gallons middle of this new year. They would be able to school somewhat and then have more room with the new tank... Would be neat to have a school of about 5...

UPDATE!

I went for it and got two more chromis to try and comfort the one in there. I dunked em in last night and turned off the lights. (got my new lights by the way... also too small, but will have to customize it). This morning the three are swimming together and the clown fish are making no aggressive moves! Will keep watching and giving updates as I see anything changing.

Will show pics with new lights this week. Got a water change coming today.

Ya nevermind... I think I'm gonna have to just remove all the chromis... The original one is picking on the new two. With a here and there pick by the clowns... I dunno what to do. Ugh

Wait a day, they do establish a pecking order. Is the picking like blood and guts picking or just chasing and posturing?

Chromis can be right devils in smaller tanks, they are damsels really, through and through. You have one or you have large groups of odd numbers. And to do that you need a good sized tank.

I find chromis, damsels and clowns all the same, all narky little beggers. Even kept in a group, they pick on the smallest one all the time until it dies before moving on to the next smallest.

That is why I like my Yellow watchman. :)

its just chasing. No blood and guts. Not even any fins torn. They have slowed down a bit, and the original chromis is being nicer. Will keep watching. As of this morning the three chromis are swimming together... no attacks from anyone, yet..
