Today's a new day.

Keep up the good work, Elephant! I'm already proud of the progress you've made, even in the short time since you first posted this thread. I know you've been interested in live plants lately. If you can't set up the 10L, maybe you can look for some plants for the 41L. I'm sure your cardinal tetras would appreciate it. Just don't forget to keep working on your tank maintenance skills ;)
Thanks. Parents won't let me have some live plants for the 41L too. So I'll wait.

Hi @WhistlingBadger.

Do you want to join my thread? I am less stressed than yesterday and caring for my fish. I'm doing good on my hobby and the fish are okay at the moment. At least I'm following others' advice and taking good care for the tetras.

-------------

Fish and shrimp are important to my hobby because I am trying to keep different companion animals all by myself, including fish. However I'm going to do a follow-up from the pygmy perch thread. I care deeply for native fish too, including the salamanderfish and the other WA natives. The local government can do better laws than they have currently. The Fisheries department are mostly bad, but they did some good things a few times before. But I'm not going to mention all the bad or good things they had done. Re: breeding pygmy perch. This is interesting. Some say they can breed in ponds like crazy when the habitat's big enough for them.

So @Colin_T and others, I'd love to follow your footsteps on being a good hobbyist and doing something slightly different. I will use the 2L ice cream bucket method for water changes for the 10L tank once it's complete. I understand that the salamanderfish isn't available to the hobby at all due to government laws. But I can try and support the conservation of the species. I'm only a young un, and I'm not yet an adult but I'd love to actively help with saving the species. The salamanderfish means something to me and they meant something to you. I not only love fish from South America, but love fish from my home country too. Saving fish is equally as important as keeping them. Helping out for others is a good thing to do for our lovely hobby and the forum.

Not giving up is the real most important thing when you do a hobby for over a year or more. And a good understanding of the hobby is all you need. They are your best friends and they can help you out easily. I wish I went to TAFE or University and studied marine biology, but I'm not ready yet. Rarities of the hobby not only inspire people, but help people know their species well. I wish I can turn back time and prevent the government from not making laws about catching wild native fish and breeding them in captivity, but I can't because time is inevitable.

So thanks for everything everyone.

Why don't you sign up for TAFE?
Fremantle TAFE does Aquaculture and it's pretty easy.

Back in 95/96? I had a customer who came into the shop each week and he asked lots of questions. He was nice to talk to and we got along well. I ended up going to Geraldton for a few months to study aquaculture there because I couldn't get into Fremantle TAFE to do the aquaculture course there. After a few months in Geraldton I was bored stupid and had become a bit of a pool shark (pool the game like billiards and snooker). I had never played pool before but after a few months in Geraldton I could beat virtually everyone there. There was nothing to do in Geraldton except surf, fish, get drunk or stoned, or play pool. So I played pool in my spare time.

After a few months I was bored and decided to leave and come back to Perth. I went back to the shop and this customer came in and we had a chat. Apparently he had been coming in each week looking for me because he had a bunch of fish keeping questions but I hadn't been there to answer them. I said I went to Geraldton to study aquaculture because I couldn't get into Fremantle to study there. He said "You should have told me, I would have got you in". I asked how and he said "I am one of the lecturers running the course".

The lecturer was learning how to keep fish from me so he could teach the aquaculture course at Fremantle. But I couldn't get into Fremantle to study the course because I apparently didn't know enough about fish keeping. Fremantle TAFE said that to me when I asked why I didn't get in. I just laughed. :) The guy continued to come in each week and ask questions for another year or so, at which point I had moved on and was studying electronics or something at another TAFE.

On why I can't sign up for TAFE: I'm not ready yet and still a Year 12 student. I understand now. I can study aquaculture but is it as easy as marine bio? I can try to do TAFE and University, but the latter is sometimes difficult. And I'm graduating Year 12 in September by the way.

TAFE is much easier than university. TAFE is more hands on whereas Uni has some hands on stuff but more reading and writing.

If you want to do marine biology, you can do it part time, a few courses at a time. That way you don't get snowed under but too many subjects and you can really focus on the ones you are doing.

I watched a shrimp bowl aquascape video and I could do that after when the 10L project and other few future projects are finished. I'm focusing on the 10L currently, but I also like this glass bowl from Koch and Co. :

A glass bowl needs a filter for the shrimp to thrive. Can the shrimp thrive in the bowl with the filter and heater and lots of live plants? Do I need to be 18 and over to order online by myself?

Those bowls are not the best as they have a very small surface exposed to the air for gas exchange - oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.

You need to have a debit or credit card to be able to buy things on-line. I have no idea what Australian banking/credit laws are so I have no idea whether a 17 year old can have one.

Ah, I see. So why do good aquarium YouTubers do shrimp bowls without filters?

Oh and @Essjay, have you heard of Halocaridina rubra, ʻōpaeʻula shrimp? They're only found in Hawaii and is impossible to get them in Australia. These are brackish water shrimp, not saltwater shrimp.

Currently getting advice from shrimp bowls and tanks. As usual, the forum is helpful. The tetras are resting now, I will see them tomorrow. Shrimp will be an interesting gem to the growing tank collection. The aquascape vision is complete and the 10L tank is ready to go, but the parents won't let me do that yet. Australia Day's tomorrow; and I go back to school on the 31st. So from the 31st, I will be super busy but will keeping an eye on the thread.

A lot of YouTubers (Facebook, twitter, etc) do videos for hits (people watching them). Many of the videos on YouTube are rubbish and full of lies and false information. This isn't just for videos of fish, it includes gardening, space, house repairs, etc. There are people who make videos that are lies and have false information in them, and they do it purely for publicity (to get hits).

I don't know about the particular videos you are watching, but all videos on YouTube (and other forms of social media) must be taken with a pinch of salt (caution) unless you know the person doing the video is credible. A lot of YouTubers are credible and some aren't. But if someone is telling people to keep shrimp in a small fish bowl without filtration, in my opinion, they aren't credible.

There is a young guy on YouTube who has a fish room over east and he collects and breeds native fishes, as well as other fishes. His stuff is credible and he seems to know his stuff, although he still needs to learn a few things. Other people on YouTube talk nonsense and should not be allowed to air anything.
