Had a shock today while lying in bed this morning comtemplating getting up and engaging the day ahead... All calm and tranquil at this point then suddenly a splash, a rattle of the egg crate and a puuuuuuffff (something hitting the carpet). I shot up as the tank is round a corner and I can't see it from the bed. look look nothing wrong in the tank... quick glance down to the carpet and there is my Carpenter's flasher wrasse lying on the floor. I quickly whipped him up and back in the tank which is quite a difficult procedure as my halide is on a wooden stand over the egg crate... PLOP he is back in but looks stunned. He went to the bottom of the tank and lied up against a rock breathing like a machine (the rate and depth were huge). After about 5 minutes he paddled himself into the rock work and went to his favourite 'hideout'. After 10 minutes or so I thought I would feed the fish but no sign of the wrasse; still tucked up in his pit. A few brine shrimp and mysis shrimp hit the water and there he is, racing around scooping as much food into his mouth as he could physically manage!! Looks like he forgot that he was carpet surfing less than 20 minutes ago but eh as long as he is ok. I presume he jumped through the little square holes as there is no other defects in the sheet?? Anyone else had this problems? It may now be sensible to look into a clear colourless sheet of acrylic to modify as a lid.

Happy ending luckily

mine decided to jump down the back of the tank... :/
took me probably 5 or 6 mins to get him back

It is a shame when they decide to jump, really sorry to hear about that. Five to six minutes is a huge time for them to be out of water; I mean even after 30 seconds they are in real trouble with their breathing. I still have no idea what set him off like that, but I am on edge now when not around the tank. I had no concerns about him fitting through the holes but it appears it is possible. I think, as I said before, a clear colourless sheet of acrylic with some narrow ventilation holes will have to modified to make a hood. Does anyone know if acrylic absorbs UV radiation? I am thinking the colours of the corals may die back if it does......
