The Start Of My New 12 Uk Gallon Nano Reef

small update for you all to look at.

firsty i have finally moved my tank to its new location in my room and infact into the new tank i got a few weeks back which i posted about. Got everything from my old rekord 60 nano into this tank and today i got another powerhead i got a hydor koralia 3 which has a flow rate of 3200 lph/ 850 gph which is just a little over 40x the ammount the tank holds...shall i still use my koralia 1 i had in the rekord 60?? and also is there any particular positioning of the powerhead i.e pointing onto the live rock or something like that???

I only have 6kg on liverock in the tank atm how many more kilos would u reccomend me putting into the tank aswell???

will get some pics up soon of tank in new location once eveything is finished on the new cabinate.

what kinds of livestock are in there or are planned on being in there with those higher flows?

no livestock in the tank at the moment its just liverock...but though the figures are saying it 40x the ammount of water the tank contains the flow does not feel agressive at all if you put your hand in front of the powerhead....it feels about as strong as the flow from my fluval 3 filter but it obviously has a realy wide flow angle as its a koralia. hope that makes sence to you lol

been out and treated myself today.......i brought 2 clown fish.

been keeping a close eye on everything in the tank all week with all water levels just to be sure my tanks ready for a couple of fish and i felt confident with my results being...

ammonia 0ppm
nitrate and nitrite both 0ppm
salinity 1.024...will water it down just a little when i plumb in RO filter tomorow
tank temp at constant 80 F

this may sound like a very silly question but when the lights in the tank go out they dont seem to settle down at all they just keep on swimming around the tank and into the current of the power head.......so with the flow of the water will they still be ok to lay on the bottom and get some shut eye????

realy random question but just fort ide ask it lol

clowns are machines they just swim n swim well mine seem to ive not seen them rest yet!

They will find their spot in time. Mine sleeps on a clump of spagetti alage ..lol hes so cute :) and the tomato sleeps under the powerhead. From what Ive seen they are a bit bonkers and its nothing like keeping freshwater at all, but twice as much fun :)

my first week i had a good sized diatom out break. get a mag float for the glass and a soft toothbrush to scrub the rock.

thanks for the replys people.....and yea your right they are machines i havnt seen them rest yet but mind you they have only been in there since saturday night they are staring to explore the tank more now though and there are plenty of places in ammongst the rocks to get away from the current.

would you say i have to much circulation in the tank with a hydor koralia 3 which quotes 3200 lph or 850 gph which works out just over 40x the volume of the tank??? when its lights out i have been running the koralia 1 by itself as i wasnt to sure if the strong current from the koralia 3 was to strong an stopping them resting??

What kind of food can i feed the clowns as at the monent i have just got some king british marine flakes which has freeze dried shrimp, krill (whatever that is) and then the flakes.

heres a quick pic of the tank as it stands now with the lighting i fitted last night......now has 72 watts of daylight blue T5 lighting.

Hi.. new set up looks good :)
You have some of the nicest rock Ive seen i ages, its so natural looking :)
Powerheads.
I would say point one upwards, one downwards towrads the rock and the your filter will go across the tank. The one upwards will really help with good oxygenation, also the different movements of the water wil allow for all areas to be covered without blasting too much in one direction.
Just a thought :)

Clowns..
You want to get them some mixed frozen food.. Fish & Fins
They are really good , I lost my first batch in post due to strikes and they replaced it without question FOC straight away. Really good service :)
I only feed mind frozen with the odd bit of flake that just gives them something to nibble on in between meals :)

thanks for the gd comments littleme..... i realy like the rocks to my lfs has a huge brick pond in where the fish etc are and its always full to the brim with rocks and when i got my first batch and this one i realy made sure u dug deep to get the best shapes of rock.

as for powerheads using the koralia 1 wont make to much more current in the tank will it??? i just dont want the fish to be battling with a current 24/7 and not be able to get any rest when the finally need it lol

will my frozen daphnia and blood worms i feed my tropical fish be ok for my marines then???? i find it so funny when feeding the marines as the powerheads blow all the food around and the fish are racing around the tank trying to get it lol

found a new little critter in the tank today.......a small white starfish which i have no idea where it come from....its no bigger than 10mm across so quite small but will be nice once its got bigger.

What about some pics craigy, would love to see the progression in visuals.
Regards
BigC

well i have posted various pics throughout the topic but ill post some again so they are all together from when the tank was established in the rekord 60 to in the new 20G its in now......

just a quick little update......i got my RO filter plumbed in tonight so no more trips to the lfs with containers to buy water and no more buying de-chlorinator for my tropical fish water aswell so its gd thing all round :)

its only a 120lpd max but its fine for me as ill only use it once or twice a week....was a little supprised at the slow flow of gd water lol.......its just a little slower than a steady stream of water so you can see the individual drops of water.....now flushing it through an its making roughly 5lph....will the flow rate be effected by the long pipe i havnt cut down which feeds the water to the filter??? as i have it still bundled up.
