they go into tanks where people might keep both aquatic and land animals, frogs for example. The tanks don't get filled up all the way so they are planted out of water. Maybe at the edge of ponds or something too. The vallis grass you got might not do too well either, it can get quite long, but its quite cheap and cheerful, grows like mad in my tanks, 5 foot long in places.
Anubias nana would go well if attached to your wood, might be worth a look at, easy to grow and very low demands on light etc.
