Setting up a new tank, 500L

Propably :)

My tanks tend to be more like jungles than gardens. No amano style for me ;)
I just put the background in place. Nice, black cardboard.

You know, this tank is starting to look soooo tiny. Maybe I should get a bigger one.
Well a black background was what I had in mind, and I love jungles (the fish do to).

And no matter what you get you will ALWAYS want bigger tank. :D

In this hobby size does matter.

I added some uhm, 10% ammonia to the tank to give some food for nitrifying bacteria. CO2 reactor is working fine and the plants are already releasing oxygen bubbles. pH 6,5.

I also have a hitchhiker. Can you see it? Not the small snail.

A baby Caridina sp. I'm not sure about the exact species, but they do seem to eat algae as good as the amano shrimp. But these can't be Caridina japonica because their offspring won't live in fresh water, right?

It moved to the large tank hidden between the plants, I suppose. There are some baby shrimps and larger ones in the 60l tank.

wonderful tank :)

are those just normal branches you got from outside? or did you do somehting special to them?

Apple tree branches. It was my favourite one, Valkea Kuulas was the uhm, brand, but it got a disease and had to be cut down. So now part of it is in my tank :)

There's some bacteria film on the branches, but I believe they will dissappear soon. Malaysian trumpet snails eat it.

Some pictures from today.

Will lotus bloom in an indoor tank?
Nymphaea lotus (zenkeri) green is the one in the picture and they will most likely flower in my tank. They just need strong roots, nutritious bottom and *kaboom*, you don't have anything else in your tank, the floating leaves will overshadow other plants and the flowers will knock down the uhm, cover glass??

They are cool :D

Water parametres today:

25C
pH 6,5
KH 3
GH 5
NO2 0 mg/l
NO3 10 mg/l
NH4 0,5-1 mg/l
PO4 0,25 mg/l
Fe 0,25 mg/l
Cu 0 mg/l

(20.4.2004: NO2 0mg/l, NO3 0mg/l, NH4 0mg/l, 21.4.2004: I added 25ml 10% ammonia and got NH4 5mg/l)

So, I suppose there is enough nitrifying bacteria because NO2 has been 0 but NO3 is rising and NH4 dropping. When NH4 reaches zero, I will put the fish in :D

There's PO4 because of shrimp sticks I added the first and second day.

Lots of nitrite, nitrate and very little ammonium. Gonna change more water and add ammonia.

Some pictures.

Plants =)
