Running A Fish Shop

That is interesting vinylman, I remember my folks saying it changed names shortly after and as result of a management change and slip in standords  I honestly think that a good shop relys on good managememnt. If the manager is good, they will get the current staff and livestock conditions up-to-speed quickly. Without good management, things will be allowed to slide.

All the best

Sorry for your news.

I'd not bother writing your CV about fish keeping. I'd big up your experience as an engineer, your degree and other qualifications and the fact that you have, (I'm assuming give your trade) been trusted with projects involving many thousands of pounds. Demonstrate you can be trusted, are reliable and that you are responsible. Given that you have little experience in professional aquatics these need to be the things you focus on.

Use your covering letter to explain your circumstances and demonstrate how dedicated you are to the hobby. I would also be careful about pushing the ethics of fish keeping. Dont say "I would never sell a young Oscar to someone with a two foot tank, its disgusting" say "Id sell someone with a 2ft tank a young Oscar but not before making them aware of how large they get."

If they don’t understand that then you should not work for them but beware that they will want to make money not friends on this forum and that fish welfare will most likely come second to cash flow.

Oh and regarding the confidence thing, Ive always done best at the interviews where I dont really care if I get the job. That way you are relaxed. If you get to interview remember the fact that you are an accomplished professional engineer and that youre only really applying for the job as a stop gap. If you dont get it then something else will come along.

Play up the fact you are a respected and trusted member on this forum but dont tell them you have 11741 posts. They might think youll be on here all day! ;)

Well they don't want me for it, want someone with aquatics shop experience not just a hobbyist

however the recruitment agent looking after that job said he's seeing a different client on monday and he thinks i might be perfect for a role that they're offering up that's more in line with what I do now so he's putting me forward for that. So you just never know even though I didn't get the fish shop job applying for it might be the best thing I ever did!!

at least if you are interested in the hobby then you will know something about fish. Anyone can get a job in a fish shop which may be a small private firm, not really much of an experience until you have kept them IMO

i think i know which fish shop it's for anyway, and i wouldn't be overly enamored with working there anyway!

regarding living death (armley road), they changed there name (not ownership) because the owner got charged for cruelty to animals, he has a few stores nationwide, when things go wrong he simply changes the name of the shops. I would never buy a fish from there but they have a fantastic selection - some real beauties, i wonder who there supplier is.

fantastic stock, just a shame they have no clue how to care for them.

it is frustrating as the premisis could be fantastic, the supplier is obviously great, if it wasn't staffed and run by complete idiots it'd have all the potential to be one of the best shops in the country.

we always say when we win the lottery we'll buy it off him and sort it out!!

wow im sorry about your problem miss_wiggle, my dad currently is having the same problem, only hes resorted to self employment with a friend.
ive worked in a LFS doing all the standard jobs, maintaining the tanks, feeding, waterchanges cleaning etc and the managers are always the go to guy.
like if a customer comes in
asks if you can keep all these fish together, even if you have a tiny shadow of a doubt, go to the manager, cause they are required to know the answers.
would be good if you added in that you are good at listening and solving peoples problems aswell as easy to talk to =)

I hope you have some evidence to back that up, otherwise such comments as the above run a very real risk of a libel case being filed.
