Roma 200, My First Journal

Noone replied to me in the sales section, so i had to go on ebay to buy some. Ive got 9 plants coming but are from malaysia. When i got my last lot of crypts from there they send just the roots because the leaves always melt. So hopefully the roots will stay alive.

Thinking i need some more wood to go in the tank so might have to look at a local fish shop.

My lights come on at 4pm and i noticed my cherry barbs going crazy. One of my females have laid eggs everywhere! Dont think any would have survied though due to me not having many plants. I have breed guppys before like nearly everyone else has, but got me thinking could and should i breed the cherrys? I do have a spare 95Litre tank sat empty, was going to sell it but im having second thoughts and trying breed before selling it. Going to do some research and ask some questons in the barb section.

went to shop to get a few plants and came out with no plants but 2 bolivian rams!! so happy finally got these! i think there quite young and chances there going to be a pair? not much chance im thinking. i just hope they dont fight. will get pics up when i can and see if you guys can sex them

Lol gonna be another bolivian ram sexing discussion, I find them difficult to sex and being young chances are its gonna be even harder... We can just hope I suppose

I no theres not much chance of a pair but it would be nice to no what sex they are. So far there staying quite close to each other and the only bit of aggression i seen was when they went head to head and started mouthing eachother on the head. Looks like they get on but only time will tell. Haha you got to love going to lfs to get something and coming out with some new fish. Thinking im fully stocked now. Looks like theres room but i dont want it too look like the fish are crammed in.

2 bolivians
10 lemon tetra
6 cherry barbs
5 neona tetra
1 lonely platy who keeps trying to get with my fenale cherry barbs and trys to fight off the males lol

They look nice and healthy mate, good colour too

Now to me they look like the same sex, its just im not sure which sex, if I had to guess I'd say male

yeah i was thinking they look same sex aswell. Will this cause problems like fighting? i do love the colour of them though.

your better off buying plants from a specialist shop rather than ebay planted tanks is a very good place to buy

I don't know if you have your answers on the Bolivians. I keep seeing everyone say they are hard to sex, but I am not finding that to be true at all. The ones at your store looked very nice and chunky, like mine were when I bought them. Look at their breeding tubes. After a few seconds of comparison, I can tell my 3 males from 3 females. It is very easy, the females' breeding tubes stick out, and the males are small and slant toward their dorsal fin.

My females are very obvious.

the first one in the second pic could possibly be female, but don't get excited yet. We need a closer pic focus on the breeding tubes to help out.

I have 2 Roma 200s n none I them have slots for the pipes like that mine are more square about 2" deep n 3" wide which is plenty enuf to fit my fx5 pipes thru. You may have to end up cutting bigger holes in the back

Thanks for the link Jacko. I just posted in sales section that i want some vallis and frogbit. I want to try and get most of my plants off this forum. Ive already had some anubais and moss which have all been really good. As i said ive already orderd my crypts from ebay but from now on if i cant find them on this forum i will check out that website thanks!

Thanks for the advice FishFanatic04. I will try and look at there tube in a min. Just by looking at them (i know nothing about sexing them btw lol) they look the same in every way but i havent checked there tubes. So i think i have the same gender but not sure what gender it is lol. Maybe if i can get pics of there breeding tube you might be able to tell?

Hey Paulc glad to hear you have lemons aswell. Amazing fish. I nearly choose to get rid of all my fish and have a lemon tetra only tank. When you have keept them for a while and they body starts to turn yellow and they develop those black lines on the fins they look incredible! But since i got my bolivians its a hard choice to say whats my fav fish now lol. But lemons will always be in my tanks.I will look at that website for plants aswell mate thanks.

D4n.gr33n I was thinking about cutting the plastic lid a little just so it fits all flush. It does anoy me that on top it looks a bit rubbish not that i really look at it lol.

After looking at that sexing guide this is what ive found...

1. breeding tubes... one of my bolivians tube is the same as a female in that guide. The other one is alot smaller tube and pointed back like a male.(But im thinking maybe because its too young to sex yet)

2. Both of my bolivians look like they have a female dorsal fin.

3. Both look like they have a more round head so female.

4. Both show signs of a female tale.

So too me its looking very much like they both could be females. I would get a pic of there tubes but there way to small to get a pic of.

So if they are both females thats got to be better then having 2 males? as i think i read that the males fight?

I dont know the age of my rams so could they be too young to sex and one of them might develop into a male?

Im happy if it is 2 females because now i can study and try and find a male and see which female he wants.

Would be even more happy if it was a pair but chances of that are very low now lol.

But thanks FishFanatic04 that guide was really good! Everyone should use if to tell there gender of bolivians. Was very good!!

Waiting for a few plants to come. But also looking for some more wood for my tank. Has anyone used marsh root? Found loads on ebay and a piece i quite like. Also do you guys think it would go with redmoor wood? because the marsh root seems to be alot darker.
