Ah yes…. Thanksgiving…. The very very sad very overlooked except on the actual day holiday sadly squished between Halloween and Christmas.

But hey I appreciate the time off anyway LMAOO

My eldest sister manages a bunch of people who work from Columbia. And Columbia has SOOOOO many holidays. It’s honestly ridiculous. They get so much time off work. Jealous. But it’s quite wholesome listening to them during meetings explaining each others holidays and it’s quite amusing seeing my sister struggle to explain thanksgiving as a recognized holiday for time off yet also being the like most ignored holiday….

We are about to be transferred to Digital Voice. In other words the old analogue copper phone cables are about to be turned off and we'll have to use VoIP.
We have a modem/router (whatever it's called) which is a few years old and has no phone socket on the back. Not to worry said the info we've been sent, if you haven't got one we'll send a router which is compatible with DV. Nothing for 2 weeks, and they said the changeover will be "within 30 days". So I used the chat function on the website. Yes we'll send you a Smart router free of charge. It arrived yesterday, less than 24 hours later (I was very surprised at the speed of the delivery). Opened the box and yes it is a Smart router but it's a model without a phone socket . So back to website chat. I am assured they are now sending a router which does have a phone socket, plus a bag to send both yesterday's delivery and the old router back.

We'll see what does turn up.

I have a list of devices I need to change to the new router. I'm sure I'll have missed something.......

The Canadian version of Thanksgiving was last month, with the shorter growing season. It's a quiet family thing in English speaking Canada, and a non event in French speaking culture. If the powers that be want to offer a holiday for Balrog Appreciation Day, I'll take it. I like holidays.

You MAY not have to change over any of your devices. I assume the devices connect via Wi-Fi so just use the same password on the new router as you used on the old and everything SHOULD still connect.

Well. I’m gonna have to scrap it and start it fresh 🤭 whoopsie

But hey every time I eff up a cake I use it to make a layered pudding dessert so hey an unexpected new dessert for tonight LOLOLOL

My son did that when he recently went to full fibre. His system wasn't very happy though as his old password wasn't long enough for the new one's liking - something like the old password was 8 characters long and only lower case letters and numbers while the new one was 16 characters and included capitals. It accepted it though.

What does make me hesitate is that we have to return the old modem so that would make 2 modems with the same password etc one of which won't be in our possession. Luckily we don't have many things - 2 laptops, 2 tablets, the TV, bluray player and printer. Edit - and my husband's music streamer.

The duplicate password is easy to solve. Connect the new router and give it the old password. Then reconnect the old router and change the password.

Even without changing the password on the old router there should be no issue as it is unlikely that the ISP would re-distribute the old router as it no longer matches their system and would restore to factory wiping the password even if they did re-distribute.

Besides having the same password on two routers isn't really an issue anyway as they would have to be within wireless range of each other for any possible interference. Think about it... With the many millions of routers/modems out there it would be a miracle if there were not systems with the same password. And I believe that with the new unit having phone jack we are not actually talking about a router but rather a modem with wireless ability, sort of like a modem and router combo. Personally I don't care for combo units as, if Internet goes down you usually lose any local networks. I run just a modem with a phone jack that is connected to my own separate router. If Internet goes down my local networks are still good to go.

I'm afraid I have no idea the difference between a router and a modem  All I know that it's a box which allows us to connect things to the internet. And in a couple of weeks, to connect our landline phone.

A router is a wood working tool that has a high RPM bit that shapes and makes channels and grooves . No idea what a modem is .

I’m afraid you’ll have to move to middle earth. I hope you have a visa.

Unless you have local networks where different systems can 'talk' to each other it doesn't really matter.

For what it's worth a modem is what you have but it has a wireless router built in. A modem, to be techy, is a MOdulator/DEModulator hence the name modem. It communicates with your ISP to allow you to access the Internet and/or VOIP phone service. A dedicated router will not get you on the Internet. I't purpose is to 'route' specific data to multiple devices. One advantage of a dedicated router is that almost all will have a built in firewall which adds another layer of security.

In your case all this is not of much importance. Just change the password on the new unit to match the one on the old unit and you should be good to go.

What does ISP stand for?
