Random Discussion

I am a fully self labeled as a bit of a geek and get into some scientific things that are not exactly mainstream. Has anyone else looked at any articles concerning the apparent fact that the magnetic field of our Mother Earth is in flux and in the process of a possible full reversal of the magnetic field? This has happened in the past and is considered a possible extinction level level event.

So how do we know it has happened before? Deep earth lava flows. When lava cools the molecules align according to the poles of the magnetic field. At different core drilling depths the lava flow layers switch magnetic orientation. This is pretty much accepted as having to have been caused by a reversal of the Earth's magnetic field. While not at all proven some high level researchers believe that one of these reversals may have actually taken out the dinosaurs, not an asteroid hit. The increase of radiations would also cause more rapid mutation such as some flying reptiles eventually becoming birds. After all it has been shown and proven that a feather is nothing more than fuzzy scales.

So why should we be concerned? In our lifespan there is no impact at all but, as the magnetic field degrades, the protection from the radiation put out by out sun lessens. Most common projection of the magnetic field reaching zero is around 500 years but we would likely be extinct well before that. First, as the protection lessens, there would be an extreme increase of skin and other cancers but the main issue is that as the protection goes away the Earth would basically become a planet sized microwave oven and just cook us.

OK, enough on depressing stuff. ;) Personally I think, when considering the advancements made in the last 100 years, I believe that we will have the ability to artificially mimic the protection. Mayhaps polar orbiting satellites that are basically huge electronic magnets to mimic the natural protection.

I sort of expect to be put down on this but can supply scientific studies to counter if needed

Stock up on high-SPF, people!

Seriously, I could see this causing havoc among migratory animals, many of which seem to use the magnetic field to navigate. Personally, I'm not gonna worry about it too much, though. There's enough iron in the hills around here that magnetic compasses can get a little squirrely, so I generally rely on the sun and stars to know where North is.

Remembering an old cartoon, we're dinosaurs wishing on a falling star on that one, @jaylach . Why worry when you can't do anything?

The Dzhanibekov Effect

Why worry about such things? I wouldn't say that I'm actually worried but, rather, aware. The thought of "why worry about what we can't control" has a certain validity but it is that type of apathy that is the base cause of many of the issues we face today.

No, I cannot personally do anything about the flux going on with the Earth's magnetic field nor can I do much about global warming as both are natural cycles our planet. That does not mean that I should just close my eyes and ignore such things. After all being aware of a problem is the first step in solving a problem. This is more prevalent with global warming than the magnet flux. While global warming can't be stopped we can stop making it happen quicker. Without being aware of the situation we cannot make intelligent decisions in relation to the situation.

Sigh, speaking of global warming many believe it isn't real and many others believe that humans have caused it. If we caused global warming why is the planet Mars also experiencing the same effect? Yes, there is no doubt that we are accelerating the problem but we have not caused it.

I don't actively 'worry' about such things but they interest me greatly. For instance did you know that geological studies have shown that global warming tends to be the prelude of an ice age? Sounds weird but apparently is true. It is believed that the melting of the polar ice caps lessen the salinity of the near polar oceans which affects the slow moving north/south deep ocean currents that have a dramatic effect on the surface ocean currents which directly effect climate. It is these surface currents that make for unusually temperate winters in areas such as Seattle Washington and even further north. Disrupt these currents and Seattle has winters like Chicago and Cleveland which are on similar latitudes.

Once again, going back to the magnetic field, we are already seeing navigational effects as the north/south poles are already shifting more than in the past. The 'true' magnetic north/south poles DO normally move around a bit but this has greatly accelerated. 25-50 years ago navigation adjustments due to this were done every 5 years. Currently these adjustments are being done on a yearly basis.

Sorry but such issues REALLY intrigue me and I tend to get long winded. Oh, and sorry if my using the term 'global warming' offends anyone as I know it is considered politically incorrect and the term 'climate change' is 'supposed to be used but I happen to strongly believe that the only thing that is truly politically incorrect is the entire concept of political correctness.

To me, it isn't so much about closing my eyes to reality; it is good to be aware. But I have a finite amount of time and energy in this world, and I prefer to focus it on tangible things that I can actually change, or at least influence. I can't realistically do anything about the earth's magnetic field or the fever it seems to be running. I can love my family with everything I've got. I can try to be a good example for my students, and teach them how music can make them better people. I can notice all of the beauty in this world, be thankful, and even add to it in small ways. I can learn about our creator, and share what I've learned here and there. I can admit it when I mess up, and try to grow and learn and become better. I can forgive others who hurt me. I can take good care of myself so I am better able to do all of the above.

Those are things I can actually do, so those are places where I tend to put my energy. If I get too upset about the climate, or the political scene, or all of the impending international crises, I get all tied up over what I can't do, and it's easy to become crippled toward what I can do.

So, I try to stay informed, but I honestly don't spend a ton of time reading the news or thinking about the world scene. That's just how I work. Gotta keep it on my own level.

Having trained as both a physician and scientist I obviously believe in the philosophy of science. Scientific theories that become dogma do so because there is a consensus of agreement among the majority of scientists in that particular field. Occasionally, the majority opinion is wrong, but that is most unusual. So, when the majority of climate scientists say that global warming is either entirely man-made or is a natural climate cycle that is being accelerated by Homo sapiens, I believe them. That is because I respect the scientific process.

In regards to shifts in the earth’s magnetic field, this has happened multiple times in earth’s vast geological history. It does not correlate with mass extinctions. When and if this shift occurs, I feel fairly certain we will not be impacted gravely, if at all. Namaste.

This.

If I suddenly discover my couch is on Mount Olympus and I what I thought was static electricity is actually the power to throw lightning bolts, then I'll take care of magnetic fields. Otherwise, it's just something interesting to learn about.
Politicians have made it difficult to discuss issues like climate change, but I too go with the consensus from the scientific community. The politics come with solutions offered or not offered by leaders. The science is solid, even if saying so is politically incorrect to many. We'll never agree on what to do about everything.
When I was house shopping for a new home, I made a point of looking up climate science charts of expected flood zones for when sea level rises accelerate. I eliminated some nice looking neighbourhoods with nice houses in them. Why take an avoidable risk when there are options? A family from out of town bought a house last week up the road, and it will be in the bay before their mortgage is done. I haven't met them, but I don't think they considered the data and the signs.

My grandparents dealt with tuberculosis, the threat of polio, and U-Boats in the war against the Nazis. All were addressed and dealt with. Earthquakes, hurricanes and blizzards were threats they never solved. But I know my grandfather was very interested in them. That's all you can be with some things.

In 1997 I nearly bought a beautiful house supplanting a nice river with access to the water etc...

The house was for sale for a couple years and the price was just lowered.

I was about to trow in an offer, when it all slid down in the river.

I remember hearing a quote: “The hard thing about being a Galileo isn’t ‘standing against the majority opinion’; it’s ‘actually having a better theory’.”

I can well understand that. :) I'm just in a different situation being retired and living alone. LOL! there have been times when I've been searching on-line for something and go off on so many tangents I end up forgetting what I was searching in the first place. ;)

I swear that Simone Biles is a total freak of nature! She now has 9 gymnastics gold medals in 3 Olympics to go along with 30 wins in world games. Also being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom is nothing to sneeze at. ;) She would probably have a few more Olympic golds if she hadn't had to withdraw from most events in the 2020 Olympics due to a mental block called "twisties" that caused her to be unable to 'focus' which could potentially have caused her sever physical injuries especially on landings. Twisties is a condition that blocks the coordination between the brain and body. I don't really know much about the twisties condition but would have to guess that it is related to stress.
