preventing egg eaters

i thought infertility was cauased by DNA and genetics

either way, i dont' think i'll spawn them again until school starts :) sure i'd love to try and raise another batch of fry, but i'll just be happy with what i have so far i guess :p

Exactly FPF, maybe her body wasn't ready to produce fertile eggs, so they were infertile and that's why the male ate them.

Linda

hmm interesting i always thought eggs were eggs and it was the sperm that determined wehter or not it was fertilized. Ah i see i gotta polish up on my biology

Nope, the female can produce infertile eggs too, as in the case of true black/melano females, where 99% of them are infertile, which is why it's so hard to get "Molly" black Bettas, there's no fertile black females to cross with a black male.

Infertile egg meaning it doesn't carry what?

Infertile, meaning it can't become fertilized, the egg doesn't have the proper...um...whatever the egg is suppose to have when it's produced by the female, Lol. Sorry, I'm not a biologist, don't know the terms.

Linda

Edit: Or maybe more to the point, it can't produce a healthy embryo that will grow into a hatching fry.

its more along the lines of sterile, cannot produce any offspring. infertility can come with age, stress, lack of something during the spawn, genes, i believe that the black females are sterile as they can produce eggs but the eggs cannot create a fry its like donkeys or mules whichever they can "do it" but can't have a baby.

ah...but then are you saying that females can be infertile at certain times? i understand the black geno thing, the females are BORN infertile, but my female has been fertile. If she's not feeling "up to it" will she produce infertile eggs even though she is noramlly fertile?

could it be that she is too old? like in women i believe they gradually become infertile as they age? :dunno:

i dont' think she'd age that fast since the last tiem she prodcued healthy growing fry was 2 weeks ago (that could be why -_-)

i know, i think this is just gonna be one o fthose mysteries :dunno: i'll give up on breeding them for now

Thanks Slam, that is what I was thinking, I just wasn't able to word it properly, I'm tired, Lol.

That's what I'm thinking CC, however honestly, I'm just throwing out ideas as I don't know if that happens or not, although it seems logical to me.

I'm just trying to think of possible reasons as to why he's eating the eggs, so I'm thinking out loud (out typing? haha). It's very possible he is just eating the eggs even though they're fertilized, but the fact that you say you pulled him and yet no eggs hatched leads me to believe the eggs are no good for some reason, hence the reason I'm thinking of reasons in that direction.

Keep in mind...I'm working on about 5 hours sleep a night right now because of the Olympics, so the brain may not be working too well, hahahaha

Linda

lol i undrseatnd what lack of sleep does to your brain  i have my own expierences with hw and that lol

anyways, i don't know if last time the eggs didn't hatch becuase tehy weren't fertilized, or they ddin't hatch becuase fungas got to them.

Ahhhh well, it's alright, they're both still sweeties  i'll just try again in a month or so :S

Maybe she just needs to rest :dunno: and maybe she doesnt want to make fertile egggs but she has to cuz of the food she's eating so the most she can do is to make them infertile :dunno:
