Planning On Building Super Oddball Tank

Campbelli are with out a doubt the most expensive. when pulcher are available they will sell for around 50 quid for a 4-5" fish which is about the size campbellis are coming in at and sell for touch under 100.

Okay, I have completely rethought the stocking. The tank now is a sort of 'peaceful oddball community'
  • Bala Shark x5
  • Black Ghost Knifefish x1
  • Teacup Stingray x2
  • Giraffe-Nosed Catfish x1
  • Suriname Geo x4
  • Senegal Bichir x1 pair
  • Silver Dollar x8
The tank will have minimal decorations (1 or 2 small roots or bogwood in one corner). It will have the sand substrate and that's about it.

Would that be better than the tanks mentioned before??

Dump the giraffe nose cat and rays and thats fine.

All rays under the "teacup" name will reach atleast 16" disk and some even bigger.

Your best bet for rays is the scobina ray but these are hard to come by and aren't the best ray to start with. To get a idea of the size of the rays, draw out a 12" circle, then ask yourself if you think you still have space.

Giraffe catfish will just get too big plain and simple.

Use the space more suitable smaller oddballs.

Firstly, there is no such thing as a "teacup" stingray. It may be in the fish index, but that is far outdated now, and tecups could be anything from scobina to motoro, its refering to the size of the disc (i.e teacup size) even if its the name give, we need scientific names for these fish!!!
I would just go with 6 SDs if it were me, and whats the sci name of this "Giraffe-Nosed Catfish" please.

Mike

I have to disagree with the Teacup ray fish index profile. P. Laticep are not only very rare and hard to get hold of a true laticep but they grow to a disk size of more like 20".

Rays under the 'teacup' name tend to me reticulatus, hystrix, Orbiginyi, yepezi and laticep.

and as I'ved already mentioned all of these species will grow to atleast a 16" disk.

Ok I stand corrected on the Giraffe catfish Auchenoglanis occidentalis, they do only reach 45cm, i was thinking of the Niger catfish at the time which reaches 3ft odd.

Okay, after dumping the rays and cats, I've come up with this:
  • Black Ghost Knifefish x1
  • Silver Dollar x10
  • Suriname Geo x4
  • Senegal Bichir x2 (1 pair)
  • Green Phantom Pleco x1
Would that be good??

GobyMaster

Edit 1: I was working on my post while you posted your's, Paul_MTS, so I didn't see what you said about the catfish. Would it be safe to add one (or 2) with the stocking above?

GobyMaster

Teacup Stingray see here.

Giraffe-Nosed Catfish see here.

Yes, and like I said:

Like I said, that refers to the profile ste made, which isnt accurate enough and could be for a number of spcies of rays.

Sheesh settle down luv.

He decided to dump the rays 20 minutes ago. I went over the possible species Teacup covers and sizes.

Goby Master- Yes 1 giraffe nose catfish in your tank would be acceptable although I think they tend to suck on slime coats so your bichirs and BGK may be in danger. Have a look at Sorubim limas.

No promises ;)
That last list you posted sounds good GobyMaster, allthough if it were me id go for a little more veriety. The good thing however with that list is that it leave you room to add to it as and when you see something (suitable) that you like. You could try and get a smaller pike species?

Alrighty, oddball variety tank stocking idea:
  • Black Ghost Knifefish x1
  • Silver Dollar x10
  • Suriname Geo x4
  • Senegal Bichir x1 Pair
  • Green Phantom Pleco x1
  • Needle Nose Gar x1
  • Green Terror x1 Pair
  • Clown Loach x4
I really like the look of the Needle Nose Gar!

With this idea, there will be activity at all levels!

It would be densely planted with either plastic or very tough plants because of the Silver Dollars, and there will be various caves hidden among the vegitation.

What do you think?

GobyMaster

Auchenoglanis occidentalis, unlike what that link you posted says have a maximum size of 28" I think? Though that is wild size, see here, so they could well be smaller in captivity(?).

The green terror pair if they breed will dominate the other fish in most cases, depending on the fish themselves, but it's best to plan for the worst.

I'd up the number of clown loaches as well.

IMO, silverdollars are crap :p
They get very ugly when older and,
Why waste all that tank space??

When they get older they get a bit more beefy and colourful, not ugly lol.Always good to have some dithers aswell :good:
