I have 2 breeding angels in my 55g. At first they were both getting along and started breeding when their bodies were only 1 inche (~2cm) in diameter. Then the male got sick, and was "successfully" treated for hexamita. The male had no external signs of the disease after treatment but he never eats very well, although he does eat, just slowly. He is VERY docile, I can literally reach in the tank and touch him with him swimming away, he also acts as though he is blind! I cant scare him or make him react with my hand on the outside of the glass. The female is strong healthy and growing fast, she is now bigger than him but because of his very low weight she must be 6x his mass.
She now attacks him often, but then leaves him alone for a while. She lets him fertilize her eggs sometimes but chases him off often too.
Since the male is so thin and she is not, perhaps she has decided he is not good enough? Im wondering if I should quarantine this male to try to get his weight up? Or separate them and return the male to a store. Is it possbile the female will "accept" a new healthy male of the same size?
