I have 2 breeding angels in my 55g. At first they were both getting along and started breeding when their bodies were only 1 inche (~2cm) in diameter. Then the male got sick, and was "successfully" treated for hexamita. The male had no external signs of the disease after treatment but he never eats very well, although he does eat, just slowly. He is VERY docile, I can literally reach in the tank and touch him with him swimming away, he also acts as though he is blind! I cant scare him or make him react with my hand on the outside of the glass. The female is strong healthy and growing fast, she is now bigger than him but because of his very low weight she must be 6x his mass.

She now attacks him often, but then leaves him alone for a while. She lets him fertilize her eggs sometimes but chases him off often too.

Since the male is so thin and she is not, perhaps she has decided he is not good enough? Im wondering if I should quarantine this male to try to get his weight up? Or separate them and return the male to a store. Is it possbile the female will "accept" a new healthy male of the same size?

Hi, I would seperate them and try to grow the Male - feeding up on Frozen Bloodworm, B'Shrimp etc.......

>> My Female Angel has accepted 3 different Male partners, and Produced good Offspring with all of them. > I've read that the Female chooses several partners in natural environment, so if you introduce a proven Male of similar size, then She should accept as new partner - of course, all Fish have different personalities, so who knows for 100% sure?

(p.s; I have my Temp. slightly higher than average and feed them on Frozen Bloodworms along with Prima/Flake - they breed almost every 10 days!

Good luck. - Angels are good at recovering - especially in clean water, regularly changed.

Thanks for the tips, what is "Prima/Flake" I cant find it here. (Canada) I do use "New Life Spectrum optimum fresh h2o flakes" , Ive heard this is good, is it? I have not been feeding bloodworms as often as I should. I start today after a quarantine. Is a 5g ok for a quarantine for a small angel?

Also, ive allways been concerned about the ph change when moving a fish from a co2 planted tank to a quarantine tank without co2....any concern?

Sorry, I thought you were in UK....'Tetra Prima' are Granuals for Cichlids, Angels, Mid-swimmers - they enhance colours, - Any good quality Flake food or Granual would be good as the staple diet, with Frozen Bloodworms, Brineshrimp, Tubifex, Daphnia as extras.

>>> The bigger the tank the better for Angels, especially height-wise......+ As long as there is not too much difference in PH, then it should be o.k - Between 6.5 - 7.8 is usually fine, but making both Tanks the same would be advisable.
(Transfer say, 25-40% from current tank into Quarantine Tank before moving him? ..then add more each day to get similar PH.)

P.s; ....I reckon Canada is a bit too far to offer the Male a big 'recovery home' Tank in the shorrt-term, then!!?!?

Yes, I think shipping this fish when it is -20 C here would be a bad idea, however I appreciate the offer. I’m going to quarantine the fish in a 10g tank and feed him well with frequent water changes....
