Hi marine lovers, hope you don't mind me popping my head in for a min :p . I currently run a Juwel Rio 180 aquarium with the internal filter / pump it came with. It is stocked with tropical fish and the unit is extremely quiet, so much so it's in my bedroom and doesn't bother me in the slightest when going to sleep or when sleeping, all you hear is the slightest (and I mean slightest) hum from pump.

I'd love to migrate over to a marine environment but aquarium would have to stay in my bedroom. Is a running marine set up a lot more noisy?

No necessarilly, I have a powerfull skimmer on my rio 180, the deltec mce600, that is noticeable but If i turn it off then you cant really hear anything, TMC's new v2 skimmers are apparantly very quiet.

My nano is pretty quiet...the air pump on my 46G FW is louder than the fans on the hood of my marine. However, some marine animals can make loud clicking noises at night. Eg, mantis shrimp can come in as a hitchhiker..however, yoiu can trap it and be rid of him. SH

thanks for the replies, tbh i'm not too bothered about fish noise, however if the required equipment is quite noisy then it might be a no no :( . if i was going down the marine route, i'd be prepared to buy better quality pumps etc if that would make a difference (noise output), maybe not the most expensive, middle of the range probably.

funnily enough the small pump supplied with my Rio 180 is probably quite a cheap one but it's extremely quiet ... and yes it is on :hey:

My marine tanks run very quietly. The only time I can ever hear something is when it starts to vibrate on the glass, but you just move the thing thats doing it and it goes back to being silent. They are definately no noiser that my FW tanks!

YOU'LL HAVE TO SPEAK UP MATE CANT HEAR YA

Nah my tank aint that noisy really - well let just say on the nights that I have had
to sleep on the couch/setee :grr: :*) I have never really noticed it being that much
louder than my old trop setup

:look: :look:

Do you have a carpeted room? If so that will really help to keep things semi quiet.

Ofcourse its a definately possibility, pumps should be silent anyway if they are balanced right, the only piece of equipment that you would need to look into is the skimmer.

Overflows, fans and powerheads are the main causes of noise pollution. Durso type overflows will help reduce the gurgling of the overflow and using 'Silent' PC fans instead of house fans can reduce noise there. With regards to powerheads the only way to reduce the noise is to mount them correctly on rubber suction cups but there will always be a residual hum.

Like anyother 'white' noise you get used to it, i've slept on my sofa next to the 160g reef and was only woken up by the pistol shrimp when he went nuts for some reason.

My tank isnt very noisy, but then i have 5 other tanks in my room so it just turns into one general noise. The loudest thing is the air-pump which drives the skimmer which i tend to turn off at night anyway..

Ben
