Can I turn off my filter at night?

What on earth man? I am genuinely confused.

I keep my filters and fans on because I’m used to them, and if I turn them off or don’t have them on, then I have trouble sleeping...

Can you even define what PK's reaction is or how it was intended? Stop sniping at me son. I don't know what your issues are and I don't care.
I sniped at no one, and I'm not your son.
Trolling becomes you not.

Sorry, I was being esoteric. I love white noise for some reason. My play/work computer has 12x120mm fans and 2 high-speed pumps in it. I don't tend to sleep well without it in earshot. White noise, from what I've read is a complex subject, but some folks clearly exist well with it.

......big words and tape measures.......?

My question is this: Why do we have noisy filters?

I have 5 filters going all the time. Sounds like a flowing creek when water levels get low, which is A-Ok with me. Not one make any impeller noises. If it did, I would see if it could be corrected, and if not, bin it and obtain one that doesn't have obscene noises. HOB filters are pretty cheap these days. Even the fancy bio-wheel ones.

I have 2 Marineland Penguin 200's running. 1 Marineland Emperor 400 going. 1, I believe Tetra whatever for up to 15 gallons. Then then Fluval FX4. Not one makes a peep.

As for shutting them off....not if I can avoid it. Only time they are off is during cleaning.

Tetra Whisper filters do a pretty good job. Aqueon QuietFlow are amazingly quiet.

I'm sure I've read that when you turn a filter on that has been off for 12 hours it releases toxins into the water column. Although, I could be lying. Who knows?

I have heard that as well, except I saw 8 hours. Who knows? :dunno:

The main drawback to hang on back (HOB) style filters is the water level in them drops to the same level as the tank when the power goes off. This could leave the filter dry overnight and that would kill the filter bacteria and cause the tank to cycle.
Yep, that’s my problem with my Aqua clears. :)
