New Weekly "off Topic" Topic No. 25 (23/07/12)

I've got nothing against relaxing english for speech (I'm from Birmingham so I can hardly talk - metaphorically or literally ;) ) I just get irritated when english is written badly as it tends to be due to this great age of technology.

A fellow writer. YAY! One of my ongoing book series is in first person stream of consciousness and the grammar in it is appalling. Only my friends read it though so it's OK.

I'm used to hearing people speak like that, but when they type ARE instead of OUR, it gets confusing. For exmaple: "It was are best day." ~My friend, Travis.
LOL.

I've written 3 drama novels (part of a series called Server), which are distopian cyberpunk style. But now I've moved on to comedy sci-fi, and it's still ongoing. It will only be 1 volume, but it's split on chapter episodes since it's mostly for a movie I'm working on along with a few friends. Each episode/chapter usually focuses on a visit on a different planet, and begins and ends with the spaceship of the main characters appearing out of/disappearing into a burst of flames, usually with damage to the surroundings or just amazement of the planets' inhabitants.
Can be found on deviant art as Alien Ride, not sure if I'm allowed to post links here to deviant art though. But you can find it easily if you type in google Detonatress Alien Ride.

I'll have to check it out. I'm not so hot on Sci-Fi - started a series a few years back but it's never really got me anywhere. As for comedy :no: I just haven't got it. Lol.

It tends to be those that exagerate the a, as in gah-raj instead of gah-ridge.

Another pet hate of mine is those that interchange have and of and put should of instead of have vice versa.

Well, it's mostly done for laughs, though the characters do degenerate to the point where they nearly get into the anti-hero type.
The two main characters start out as a very ignorant, stupid, oblivious, happy human who just stole one awesome car (and a giant spaceship), and an alien who's polite, naive, loyal and anxious. Along the way, the human gets worse, nearly becoming a bad guy, while the alien becomes somewhat of a sad and aggressive, borderline psycho guy, at least at this point where I'm at with the chapters.
Though they won't stay like that, their personalities change according to how much crap they go through and how the people around the duo influence them.

I've heard the gah-raj version quite often, sounds more like something in French.
I used to make the "should of" mistakes when I was younger. But I've learned about the "should have" on a forum, so I've been using "should have" ever since then.

Oooh, that's one of mine too!

I assume they're writing "should've" as they say it, without realising the derivation. That's what happens when people talk more than they read :p

Reading good English is the best way to learn to write good English! Seems obvious but is often forgotten!

It would appear that the English are pretty serious about the use of their language, as in all of my previous "weekly off topic topics".... this subject went to "hot" topic within 2 hours of being posted and is also the first one to exceed the 40 reply mark.....

Thanks to all the regular readers and responders to the weekly topic..... glad we have some followers here..... I may even consider to request a regular sub section under General Chat (from our Admins) where our weekly discussions can be posted in one forum..... We are at week 25 atm and at least 98% of our topics went to hot (meaning in excess of 14 replies).....

... or more like moving to 50 posts..... Here's a little something I found..... appropriate:

Lol! Yeah, I've seen people mistaking then for than and vice versa. And its with it's. There was another pic about grammar, but it's too rude to post on forums, it made me laugh though. Especially about comma use and apostrophes. Also about using letters as words (U, Y).

I can be very pernickety when it comes to correct grammar and spelling, some might even say "obsessive". My particular bette-noir (that's French, btw) is incorrect use of apostrophes - they are never used to indicate a plural. They are used to denote a missing letter or to denote possession.

It's = It is.
Ludwig's = belongs to Ludwig.
Apple's does not equal more than one apple.

But spelling is important too.

and I often have to withold from chipping in and correcting their grammar which is appauling to say the least...

...

Are you particular about using the correct English when you communicate .... (and this goes for spelling as well).....

So, that would be "appalling", Ludders.....

(I haven't trawled the entire thread, so apologies if this has already been commented upon)

Yep, me too.

Hah!..... congratulations the_lock_man..... You are the first one to have noticed my deliberate spelling bait out there :good: :lol: .... YES!!... "appauling" should in fact be "Appalling" :nod: .... but then.... have you noticed that "Ludwig" is not spelt "Ludders" :no:

Merely an affectionate nickname, but if you'd prefer to be more formally addressed, then so be it. Personally I don't like it when people insist on typing every single letter of someone's screen-name. TLM is a far easier way of referring to me. I might change my screen-name to Llanfairpwllgwyngychgogerychwyrndrobwll-Llantysiliogogogoch....... (For those that don't know, this is a village in Wales, near Bangor, which has the honour of having the longest railway station name sign in the country. The locals shorten it to Llanfair PG.)

I can copy-paste your nick though, but saying it would be quite difficult if it were that long... X_X
